Mine pick up small debris (Enought to make a 5 gallon bucket of tank water look disguisting when I wring them outPharaoh;3357018; said:I would have to disagree here. When I ran sponges in all 13 of my tanks, they were all spotless. All of the debris was trapped int the sponges. I had to wash them in clean water for at least 10 minutes each to get all the debris out. They are very effective at removing debris.
I had one that looked quite similar to the one you are using. They do well enough, but do leave a bit to be desired as the opening at the top of teh sponge will allow for less resistance for the water than traveling through the sponge. Look into the Hydor sponge filters. They are weighted and do an excellent job of removing waste.
Depends on flow rate and porosity of the sponges. Really hard to say. I would just sit back and see how well it all works and not worry with the comparisons so much ya knowBPags52;3367105; said:Well last night I hooked up the replacement sponge I bought to an old powerhead (I forget but I think its about 135 gph or 150 maybe). All I needed to do was attach the sponge to the intake of the powerhead right?
So now I have 2 sponge filters running (both sponges rated for 25g), one on an airpump and one on a powerhead.
I'm curious, if the bio-filtering capacity of these 2 sponge filters were compared to that of a HOB filter, what would they be equivalent to? An aquaclear 50? 70? 110?

But essentially, as long as the water is being forced through the sponge and cannot bypass the sponge to get to the powerhead... then it's hooked up 'right'.
