Stingray prices

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I've only had my retics since febuary... and already have invested in food more then i bought my 2 at, that not inclueing electric, water, misc stuff. ... it's like breeding most larger animals... upkeep makes it lucky to break even unless you are breeding larger volumes of quality animals.. and this is alot harder to do then it sounds. I would wager 99% of the ray breeders at least in the US are "Hobby breeders" they do not make money on their pups.. but are lucky to break even or just help pay for their pets. The only fish i own that costs more to maintain are my spiney eels, they are bigger pigs then my rays atm, but my rays are juviniles... I expect their feed bill to go up.

Another thing to think about, if well cared for stingrays live for a long time. Obviously as mentioned the purchase price of the ray is the cheap part!

I get that they don't produce many pups but the success rate of the pups surviving is very high. Most egg laying fish have a 90%+ death rate. Also demand for rays can't be very high with prices being so high and the size of the tank required to keep them. I see many many for sale and thread after thread of someone producing pups. So far no one has given me a legitimate reason for their prices being so high. For example a lates japonicus perch is 10x rarer than any stingray out there but the price of the perch is lower than most stingrays aside from a hysterix maybe. Anyways I blew my wod and feel better now. Life goes on.

They did. You just ignored them. Johno's post was succinct enough even for the shortest attention span.

Dogs are all over the place, breed freely, supply exceeds demand, yet they're still pretty expensive. Why is that?

I used to breed a lot of mbuna, they would have maybe 30 fry and I would raise nearly all of them, in the wild only about 1 or 2 would survive therefore fish that have loads of fry do not lose 90% if raised properly in a protected environment therefore they are worthless. 1 to 5 rays every now and then plus the large tanks etc...plus other points make them expensive. You would need loads of tank to properly produce a large number of rays, then you need an outlet such as shop to get rid....

You would be better off saying why is a 1000 sq ft flat in London worth £2million but 50 miles away worth £250,000 or less. I was recently in a £10 million apartment in sloane square and it would have fitted in the downstairs of my house!

And in the end you have a free un-registered mutt not an akc registered english bull dog or mastiff. Show me where they are just giving away FREE akc mastiffs, I will take a dozen !
