Stingray prices

where does it say about the 90% death rate of egg laying fish in captivity ?

i think that might be your stumbling block. perhaps this is true in the wild but i doubt its true in captivity. if main comparison is based on false information then you need to reconsider the whole thing.

read the thread on feeding rays thats on here and you might start to see things from the other side. then factor in tank costs, space utility bills etc. over a year you would probably make more on a group of guppys in a small tank :D

even if you were to only get 10% of eggs to hatch from a fish that lays anything up to a thousand eggs every month its going to be very high compared to a ray that gestates for 90 days and is unlikley to be constantly pregnant or if it is then probably have a much shorter lifespan

Let me put it in simple terms because you guys just don't get it. Let's try again. This time I only have one question. Why are most fw stingrays more expensive than lets say a Japanese perch- lates japonicus? So let me do some of your homework for you to save time. These perch are ver y very rare, have high demand, and aren't bred in the aquaria. I paid 250 for my last one.

They weren't motoro. They weren't even freshwater. You obviously haven't invested much time to learn about stingrays.....but rather invested your time in researching the fish you do keep aka cichlids. Also, sending you a PM with some opinions.

Ya I know next to nothing about stingrays. But either way isn't that still a really expensive bait?

That perch may be in high demand to people on mfk but your average hobbyist has no idea what it is or why they would pay 250 for a dull colored fish.

Stingrays have a mass appeal to even the newest of hobbyist because they are so different from every other fish.

Rare doesn't always mean expensive or sought after. I can think of a lot of things that would be hard to get that I don't really have any interest in owning.

On a side note I do think those perch are sweet :cool-1:

Rays are very abundant and even considered a nuisance in their home range especially motoros

Rays are so expensive because they should be. Same as all elasmobranch should be. How'd you feel if you were being slaughtered for aquarium trade and not worth much.

They disreve to be expense a person than cannot afford to buy one cannot afford the other expenses . In my almost ten years now ,the rays are the cheapest part.they are one of the coolest animals on earth and we got gifted the potamotrygon are bye far the nicest ray species.
They disreve respect .they are more than a fish to me, more like my life style, unfourtunatley I cannot live with out them in My home.
I'm sure I could be diagnosed with some medical term for it but to me they are my passon

Rays hold their value due to their appeal and ability to community them with other fish. I owned a hard to get rarer then stingrays 24" Aba knife fish that I paid $450 plus shipping and I kept him for over a year and needed to sell him to make room for another bigger tank. I just about couldn't give him away and all I ended up getting for him was $70 from a lfs after advertising him for 3 months. It's all about the appeal but the price will come down once the market is completely over run with rays due to everyone breeding them. Rare doesn't play much in the part of pricing as I have had lots of hard to get fish that I basically had to give away.
Where you are located when trying to sell fish has lots to due with it also!

Well said Calgary!
If you find some medication that lessens the intensity of this obsession of ours please let me know....sometimes I think it will be the death of me!

well if your not interested in new reasons to answer your question then i guess that just leaves the ones alread given.

"supply and demand"

you put a hystrix, leo or pearl on here for under £100 and i bet there are quite a few people that would rip your arm off at the socket to try to get to them.

demand outweighs supply for many reasons and so prices are high( cb are expensive as the animals cost alot to keep and feed and wild caught ship in small numbers and are also difficult to get hold of regardless of how common you say they are). if they were abundent and easy to get then the prices will likley come down but speaking for myself ive not seen an adult female marble on classifieds or in any shops any time recently.

my sugestion to you is to put a few rays in with that perch and test your theory out. come back in 12mths time to revisit and let us know if you still think the same or if you have changed your mind.

The beauty and patterns of FW rays is what interests people. Then throw in the fact that they are fresh water and 95%+ people out there dont even realize they exist and the awsome factor goes up. Then add it the fact that they have live birth. Then throw in they can be cross bred and exen more amazing patterns can result. You have a fish that demands a high price. I have had fresh and salt tanks. Have had many, many different species of fish that I raised up and traded back in for something else but rays...those have stuck. Very rewarding.

Actually I think that the price of rays is rather arbitrary.
When rays were very cheap, and considered garbage fish for the ornamental fish trade, it was hard to even give away rays.

I've been in the hobby for over 26 years and have had fish from guppies to Pimas and stingrays have been on that list. They are very cool fish but I prefer the perch. They eat too much and waste too much and require a large tank which is why I'm amazed at why they cost so much. I guess most people don't care much about long term tank sizes and just want a cool fish.
