Not a ]V[onster eel.. but some pics I took today in the stream down in my garden.
The NZ Eels are probably related to the Aussie / New Guinea species. I think the record here is about 60 lbs, biggest I have seen was only 27lb though.
This little fellow is about 3ft long, my neighbour has been feeding it bits of chicken for years, so it's fairly tame and will come out for food with people around. I lured him out with a chunk of fish so I could get a picture.
I think they only grow about an inch per year, so the big ones are pretty old, up to 80 years.
Fascinating fish and it's neat to have a semi tame one in the back yard
One caution...eels that Big are also VERY old. I know of a fire eel at a LFS in AZ thats well over 30 years old. (sorry no pictures. The only time I was in the store with a camera phone he was out of the display tank while they made a few changes to it LOL.)
