So I ended up trying the commander mode on the D80 after reading about the feature here and it's cool but if not held at the right angle the SB-600 unit doesn't get the signal to fire. I bought a used chord for 30 bucks. I rest the speedlight on top of the area I want to photograph and wait for something to pass by then fire away.

I recently got a Nikon D40 with a 18-55, and 55-200mm lens. It's perfect for my needs, I don't need anything better. It takes incredibly sharp photos, and wasn't outrageously expensive.

i am looking at getting a camera purely for photgraphing my fish. these DSLR cams have such a good reputation but can you get close to the same result from a non dslr?

i'm looking at spending up to $600AUD on a cam and the NIKON D40 is the only DSLR in that price bracket. it's 6.1MP and 18-55mm lens

then there is a non dslr - olympus SP565. it's 10MP, 20x optical zoom and has 26mm lens

doesn't the non - DSLR specs sound better. is it all about the lens??

any info would be appreciated

there's alot to know before buying a camera, both Point and shoots and SLR's take great pics if the person behind the camera knows how to use the camera correctly. mega pixels are not everything. Single lens reflex camera's give many many more options and infinetly more control that p&s's, that's why they are so deisred and so pricey. hit up aquatic-photography for more info (mfk sister site), they'll give you everything you need to know.

I recommend a DSLR. Megapixels don't mean squat unless you're printing huge. Even at 6 megapixels you could get large prints that would come out clear. With a P&S You don't have the freedom that a DSLR offers. The D40 is probably the best DSLR camera for beginners and it also has an automatic point and shoot mode. The lens that comes with the D40 is also an incredibly sharp lens. I've tried some of my friends high end 500.00 cameras and could achieve very little with my aquariums. I decided to go DSLR and am consistently taking great pictures of my fish. Most succesful aquarium photography usually involves an external flash which the D40 has a hot shoe for. I didn't look up the model you mentioned but most P&S don't have hot shoes (i've seen some that do).

People's opinions may vary and I've seen great shots taken with P&S cameras. But for me I prefer a DSLR. Hope that helps I know this post is all over the road but I did it pretty quickly.

nah mate thats exactly the kind of info i was chasing. that was pretty much the way i was thinking. you can get great shots from P&S cams but with DSLR's, once perfected can take great shots everytime.

thanks alot for the info, much appreciated
