The Dreaded Aurnati Fungus

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Thanks, Aquanero. You were a huge help, and I'm happy that we were able to save the rest. I've noticed that some are beaten up from sparring, so I'll continue medicating just to be sure that it doesn't develop the fungus.

sorry to hear this, bottles. you dun good for him.
I think a sticky about the water parameter info on this fungus should be in the snakehead forum. might head off some of these guys from going into a death spiral if they were managed with this in mind, early on.

I agree. If caught early enough, I think that these guys have a good chance of survival. There's definitely some good info in here for new Auranti keepers, and if it can help save a few, a sticky is a good idea.

Aquanero,
Should I continue with the Quick Cure/Triple Sulfa, or go back to the Maracide/Triple Sulfa? One of them is getting damaged from sparring, and I don't want the injuries to develop another bout with this stuff.

Sorry to hear the news in that guy.
The way he was looking in ghe last oic you posted...antecipated a sad outcome.
Time to save the others and hope for a pair oit of them

Thanks, Joao. The last pic was quite brutal. After it started attacking the body the way that it did, I was frustrated, but didn't want to stop trying.

DC, when you have a chance, do you mind trying to help me sex these? They are very hard to photograph so I took a video and a screenshot from the video. Please let me know if you have any ideas. I thought that they were the same sex, but now I'm unsure after seeing them interact. I'm thinking that the beat up one may be a female? The healthier one has a thicker blue dorsal band, so male? Are they the same sex? From what I've heard the females are typically more aggressive, but I may be confused on the sexing.

As you can see the one is fairly damaged, which is why I'm going to continue treatment for a while. Better safe than sorry.

I would just use the MG and 3X at this point and maybe start the back down on the dosage till they are weened off the meds just keep the water a little aylkaline. They are beautiful fish. Try keeping the Ph at around 7.2 going forward. In about 5 days they should be off meds.

Sounds good.
Thank you.

Sorry to hear about the loss , on the flip side excellent work with the others , saving any of the from this infection is quite the accomplishment.

As for the pic/video, the front/bigger ones male no doubt about it. The other is hard to say in that pic/video and at that size, it's clearly not as developed as the male its with and tattered fins make that even harder.

knowing more about their behavior together might help.I've always found females to be the aggressors when a pair forms and they are driving out the others. Males typically try to impress females while fighting off other males.

If that damage all came from the male it's currently with then it's probably another younger male/less dominate male, could also be a female who won't except him as a mate and is loosing fights because of the size difference but if that's the case you'd typically see the males starting off with peaceful nips and nose bumps, then the female spinning around and starting a fight that she then looses. Any time I've gotten down to a pair of channa who are gonna either bond or fight the females been the larger fish and turns on her male. But id suspect if in this scenario the the female were smaller the male would likely be the one to win the tank.

On the other hand if it came from another member in the group then all you can do is wait for one of the above scenarios to pop up and then you'll know ! That male's displaying a nice blue band and dominate colors so regardless of the other ones genders i suspect he'll make a move one way or the other very soon.

Hope that helps!
