The Dreaded Aurnati Fungus

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Thanks, Miguel. This fungus is definitely trying my patience.

bottles ? I hope you double check with Tom before discontinuing the triple sulpha, since that is for secondary bacterial infections in addition to buffering med sensitivity in your species.

(I know nothing, but try to ask some $100.00 questions :)

Yes, I may be jumping the gun.
Most people seem to recommend MG/Triple Sulfa or MG/Formalin. I found one article that recommended using all three, but most of what I've read just suggests using one combo or the other.
Would you recommend sticking with it, Aquanero?

I have never had an issue with switching meds if one or any combination is not working. Do to the nature of these fish (I have never kept them so I'm going off what you guys are telling me) I recommended a treatment that would be effective and yet buffered to reduce any negative side effects. From that perspective we have been successful. However it would seem one fish was particularly hard hit and has not responded the same as the others. So let’s regroup and assess the situation.

How are the rest of the fish doing?
Would you say the others are cured at this point?
What is your current Ph and Kh?

While MG, 3X sulfa, Formalin and Acriflavin are the most common go to medications for fungus. I'm not a big fan of using either formaldehyde or acriflavin based medications on sensitive fish and while they can be effective there can also be some negative side effects associated with them, Formalin (3% formaldehyde) is more toxic in soft, acidic water so buffering the water to 50 ppm Kh and 100 ppm Gh and 100 ppm is recommended. Acriflavin can cause sterility in fish during extended use so would not be a choice here imo. I'm a little disappointed Projectile didn't share his info with us even though it was experimental because let’s face it, so is this. The difference is our success or failure is out there for everyone to see. In the future members can read what worked and what didn't along with the how and why.

All this being said, what is the next step? I don’t want to treat the healthy fish with this one. If the other fish have recovered sufficiently stressing them with exposure to additional treatments seems unnecessary . However you may have no other choice considering the condition of the fish in question and the risk involved in moving it at this point. Once you have checked Ph and Kh I would say try the MG/Formalin with the continued use of the Triple sulfa. The formalin will add another level of fungicidal activity while the 3X will continue to add secondary bacterial protection and buffering the toxicity. If this doesn’t seem effective then the last step would be Kanamycin/Furan 2 combination because imo this would indicate there is another underlying causative other than the fungus. Lets cross that bridge if we come to it.

Yes, I'd say that the others are pretty much cured or at about 90% health with some small marks still healing, but all are clear of the fuzziness.
Water params are the same with PH 7.5 and KH 7.
I'll do the MG and Formalin at 50% dosage. Should I go with 50% Triple Sulfa or a full dose?
Thanks.

Use the 3X full strength.

Thanks.
I forgot to mention that I did PM Projectile a while back, but he never responded. I'd still like to hear his ideas too.
I have called all of the LFS and no one has Formalin, Triple Sulfa or Maracide left. I got one LFS to order me in more Triple Sulfa and Maracide, but nobody around here seems to no where to get Formalin. Lots of people that I've talked to are recommending Quick Cure. I've never used it myself. Any opinions on it?

Quick cure is fine it's MG and Formalin use that at 50% with the 3X. See how the fish react to the QC and if all goes well you can bump the dosage a little on day 2.

Unfortunately, he did not make it. I found him dead this morning.
The other fish responded well to the MG/Triple Sulfa, but maybe he was too far gone? I don't know.
I'm going to keep treating the tank for the next few days, just to be sure that it doesn't come back. Now I have to hope that I have a compatible pair from the ones remaining.
If I had to do this again, I would start with making the water slightly alkaline, and do small doses of MG/Triple Sulfa right from their arrival. It seemed to work well for the others.

I was just reading this thread! Son of a......................gun! I'm really sorry, you fought so hard for these guys. It's good to hear the others are doing well.
