ugh where did this go what the heck...........ethics on fish in tanks to AI debates, can we clean this up
Agreed, well documented that AIs make plenty of mistakes, and bias creeps in as well in a variety of ways. But again, some comments here are addressing a much different point than I was making. All I'm arguing is that for something as mundane and routine as an internet forum thread that's been done so many times, even a rudimentary AI chat can put together a pretty good overview of the variety of ideas that tend to come up. That's all I've been trying to say, that a very low-level, simple, repetitive task like trotting out the same old debating points on a topic can be handled really well by an AI. I have all sorts of reservations, uncertainties, and doubts about AI in many other contexts, especially the ones we haven't encountered yet, but none of that seems at all relevant to compiling a little list of ideas that have been put forward many times by large numbers of people. The AI can find and summarize that just fine, probably better than most if not all of us on this forum could.Hello; You missed a main point I was making. That being the AI (ChatGPT I suppose) was flat out wrong. If you opened the link provided and looked at the images such would be clear. Wrong at more than one level.
One was the recent fad bias concerning whatever thinking (programing) the AI was doing when it generated the clearly incorrect images. I do not which it was, equity, inclusion or some other altered theme in vogue now. Some person fed the AI whatever bias it was that resulted in the fake historically incorrect images.
Another was the AI apparently could not present the images as they ought to be. Leaving the other bias out it was just plain mistaken. Making a possibly incorrect assumption I figure the AI ought to have access to history books & films. Ought to be able to see the error if there was an intelligence at work.
For several years now a movement has been afoot to fundamentally change the lifestyles of the human species. The "evidence" comes from computer programs (models) about future climate. These go beyond some ethical question.
Hello; One member posted a list of ethics pros & cons apparently pulled from an AI. Such is how we got to the AI part of the thread. Later some of us took exception to the idea of AI generated content. I posted a known example of AI bias and error and gave a link. That member posted about that link and I replied. Such is the way threads go. Not clear what harm has been done.ugh where did this go what the heck...........ethics on fish in tanks to AI debates

I have calculators. If one ever gives a wrong answer it goes in the trash. Same for computer programs, even AI. They are of little use if wrong information is lurking amongst their algorithms. Getting one thing wrong casts doubts on anything they produce.
But to get back to human discussion, here is another ethical question. This one applies more to pets other than fish I believe. We must feed our pets. To a large degree food for pets could be used as food for humans. Hunger exists among people which could be partly alleviated by directing food stuffs away from pets and to people. Similar argument could be and has been with regard to using food grains (corn) to make fuel supplements for vehicles. As i mentioned, do not think the larger part of potential human foods go to our fish. That food for sure goes to our dogs and cats. So now we can move away from AI for a bit, perhaps?
This response made my day. This simple answer ^ is probably close to accurate, but I'd modify it a bit. We keep them, not so much because we can, but because we want to, i.e. we are motivated by pure selfishness.
The justification for anything, done by anyone, can be boiled down to that one simple constant: selfishness. Anything we do...we do for selfish reasons. People who steal do it for entirely obvious selfish reasons: because they want the loot, and having it makes them feel good. But people who live pious lives and give to charity and volunteer at soup kitchens and rescue sick fish and chain themselves to old growth trees and perform any number of other "selfless" acts...do all that stuff because it makes them feel good. They've been raised to believe that good is good and evil is evil, and by doing good they will earn some Brownie points with God and go to Heaven...in other words, they do it ultimately to benefit themselves; they're being selfish.
Mother Theresa was one of the most selfish people who ever lived. She decided, or rather was raised to believe, that she needed to help everybody because that was God's will and she was doing God's work. But she didn't do it merely because she thought God wanted her to; she ultimately did it because she would feel good about herself for getting in good with God. Selfish.
Born-again evangelists who climb over my gate and trudge up to my house to try and coerce or implore or threaten me to see things their way...are selfishly grasping for that rush of gratification they have been taught to feel when they save the soul of another heathen or sinner. When a few deep-throated threatening barks from Duke sends them scurrying back to their cars...well, that selfish self-serving reaction takes precedence over the other selfishness. People who log onto MFK and answer silly basic questions posed by silly newbie fishkeepers don't do so merely to be helpful; they do so because they have been taught that helping is a good deed, and doing "good" will make them feel better. All selfish.
IMHO, that makes about as much sense as asking a nun for advice about the merits of various sex positions.
Yep! We eat meat because we want to. Same with fishkeeping. Entirely selfish Everyone who wants to pile on and tell me how wrong I am, feel free to proceed. You'll feel good...you selfish bastidges...
Hello; A relative likes new tech. Had one of those voice units in his home for a while. Eventually he unplugged it and put it away. Found it was listening in all the time. This new AI type computer is reported to be far more advanced and in some ways able to mimic thinking. Might be worthwhile if it was able to do original thinking. Alas such is not the case in the end it is limited by the programed in biases and opinions of the people writing code for it.I have all sorts of reservations, uncertainties, and doubts about AI in many other contexts, especially the ones we haven't encountered yet, but none of that seems at all relevant to compiling a little list of ideas that have been put forward many times by large numbers of people. Now that’s how you troll stir up a thread!Genesis 1:26 And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness: and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth.
Myself, I keep freshwater fish.and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea,
