very good post, i made the mistake of jamming like 8 small fancy goldfish in a 30 gal and found out 4 months later that they grow like crazy and can get upwards of 10". now i wont have any less than 65 gal per large goldfish. i could have used your info then.

i personally think its what you have in your tank depends on what you put in it

some fish are messy and some are pretty clean for the most part and even if you can fit alot in a tank cause of the one inch rule ... dont, it makes it that much harder on the tank just keep a few monsters haha

This really does help clarify. Just driving in my car today I was thinking to myself "2 gallons per inch" (that's what I've heard, rather than 1gal per inch). This really does help, though. Now I can feel a little more right putting certain fish into certain tanks. Very nice of you to post this 3 years ago :p

Hi all I'm pretty new and just wondering when doing these equations do you take the measurements inclusive or exclusive of the tail as Iv been told both?!?
