Hm I'm reading far too many comments on this thread like this.

Alot of you own rectangular fish?

Alot of nonsense anyway and a stupid system. The only way you can know how far you can push your bio is by putting the fish all in and seeing if nitrite or ammonia show up. Sadly by then its too late.

As many people have said its not just this, its space also. Too many people on here with fish that have to do 3 - point turns in their tiny tanks to go in the opposite direction.:screwy:

Agreed, sometime i feel that u guys have toomany rules. There is only 3 rules in fishkeeping: comon sense, good filtration and common sense. It should not be made sticky. As long as your fish dont stress, eating well, water parameters are good u have enough space.

What's the difference between comon sense and common sense? :D

Nodifference i put2x common sense because itz the most important thing. Like real estate /business man says: 3 most important things are location location and location

I have to take down my 125 for 4-5 years but plan on keeping it for when I buy a house
I got a great deal on a 50 gallon "cube" tank (30x19x21).
I'd like to transfer to the 50:

- 3 inch Flagtail Prochilodus (gets HUGE after a while)
- 4 inch black ghost knife
- 5 inch polypterus delhezi
- 5x 2-3 inch clown loaches

- 5x 4-5 inch roseline sharks/denison barb

good chance that delhezi outgrows the clown loaches substantially and makes em a snack

This is a man made up "rule". IMO After having kept them for over 40 yaers I have found that they also need room, some more than others. They need room to grow too.

I think the original poster meant that you need 12 square inches of surface area per inch of fish. Not 12 inches by 12 inches! since 1 square ft is needed for 1" of fish you take the length of the fish say 6" multiply that by 12" that would be your length.
