So I was going through a member thread who used milk crates for tank stands. Curiosity made me investigate this! Turns out a farming company named turns out industial strength suckers.

Company name is FarmPlast out of Joisey (Jersey, lol). Image of the strength test:

That’s amazing. I like them very much too. Can’t say I have used them for aquarium stands, or in high weight tests. However, I use them for temporary stands within my garden shed. Since space is limited, and shared with tools, bicycles, etc., I do a seasonal rotation between two lawn mowers (can’t explain why 2 and not just one) and a snow thrower, summer outdoor furniture, etc. The crates and some wood do the trick beautifully. All my crates (about 12) have been gotten as discards at various places, and all say ‘property of this or that, penalty…..”’. But they were being trashed and I picked them.

When I was a starving university student living in nearby off-campus accommodations...i.e. hovels...milk crates were the main element of interior decor and practicality. At that time, something high-class like IKEA was merely a dream...:)

So, I have had my fill of milk crates for furniture. I use them for their intended purpose, i.e. stackable storage, and I have lots. I don't consider them structural building blocks, and I'm not sure why anyone would do so. For this purpose, concrete blocks are superior in every way except for weight, and since they only need to be moved and placed one time...who cares about that? Concrete gives the impression...and the reality!...of terrific strength, stability and confidence. If a child or a dog were to tip over a chair or other heavy object so that it struck the concrete, the fish would hardly notice the impact and you would be checking the chair for damage. If the same impact occurred to a molded plastic crate that is already stressed to within an inch of its brittle life, everybody in the room would be motionless and holding their breath for a moment, then fearfully begin checking the milk crate for damage.

Plastic milk crates give the impression...and quite possibly the reality...of an accident waiting to happen.

I'd have thought a swappa crate would be more popular than a milk crate.
