The power of Milk Crates!

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Appreciate you tagging me. The milk crates oh man i forgot all about that ? If positioned right you could get away with it. I had a 180 on the milk crates. Was just a temp set up while i was waiting for a 300g to be delivered from truvu. The egg crates were awesome and defiantly a conversation starter. Tank was fine for a while but i had massive 25"-28" temensis in it and the tank itself wasent in greaat shape and one of the seems seperated. i chanced it knowing the tank would only hold for a short time. I really liked the egg crates as a stand. if i were to do it again i would put a piece of plywood between the egg crates and the tank. i didn't like how the light lit up my floor haha.

Thanks for adding that detail Mike.

Is there a chance the seams seperated because of the milk crates? You say you didn't have plywood between tank and stand. I can't imagine just the crates would offer a perfectly level surface. Maybe there was some slight tank twist, hence the seam failure?

And yes, I can just imagine what the light must have looked like on the floor shining through all those holes in the crates. I bet it was like you were having a disco in your room, lol.

It was defiantly disco night every night haha. naw the crates didn't cause the separation. others still think so but i knew there was a weak seam. it was a matter of time. just didn't last aslong as i needed it to lol. btw i seen the tank and fish when only 2" of water was left and i was able to save 100% of the bass

Thanks for adding that detail Mike.

Wow, cool...sounds like you had a live stress test for the crates! A 180 on those is impressive. :grinyes:

Actually this was pretty common back in the days. Bunch of folks used to put their tanks on milk crates. Of course, they weren’t monster tanks but 40, 60, 75 gallons were often just put on milk crates. I haven’t tried it since tanks always came with solid wood stands back then when glass was super thick. I don’t understand why so many tanks are either sold without stands or are made of particle board nowadays. Not to mention, such thin glass

I never understood the fascination or laziness of some MFKers trying to find the cheapest, ugliest, easiest way to do anything and everything...

Fixed it for you...:)

Yes, lol. This is very true but the same can be said of all the hobbyists who insist on decorating their tanks in the same cheap, ugly and easy manner, lol.

I think the sight of a tank decorated with plastic plants, fluorescent substrate and one of them treasure chest bubbly things all perched on a rickety bookshelf would send me into cardiac arrest, lol.

Nah, this is truly LAZY ASF...this owner calls the tank 'minimalist'. I call it 'cheap and don't give a damn.' The Ranchu probably cost more than the whole setup. You don't wanna take more than four minutes to set up a tank, especially when you don't fill it up.
