I had the least luck with color, growth, and health when I fed hikari exclusively. I've had much a better experience with HBH and omega1. The growth rate seems to be a bit less, but it's more consistent and the color is much better when I mix HBH and omega1. I've stopped buying Hikari unless it's on clearance, and I've been mainly buying HBH, Omega1, and Azoo pellets.

With that said, there is always an exception to the "rule". Hikari sinking carnivore and massivore are much easier to feed to picky eaters. Once I get them taking the hikari food, I'll switch to a different pellet.
I know everyone has their own experience, but mine has been better with what I have previously mentioned. Hikari is good stuff, but I think that others are just as good if not better.

Maybe people in Indiana are cheap or uneducated and don't buy enough Hikari to keep it 'fresh' - so all your food was outdated ;) Nutritionally void..

you said it yourself, you only buy it on clearance!!

anyways just giving ya a hard time.. varied diet is a good idea.. :D glad to see other stuff works for you.. I really hate HBH, though. :D

OK maybe 3 years ago i ran outta fish food and there was cat food next to my tank. Yup in it went and my fish never thought twice. This last year ive been feeding the tanks dog food bc of the larger pellet size.

Im a cheap bastard.

IF you read the Chemical makup on the backs of the fish food campared to the dog food or cat food you might be suprised its the same percentages!

dont let this blow your mind.

Thanks for the link, Bre...interesting read. I couldn't help but notice the total contrast in opinion of this author vs. what Pablo gives on the NLS site...soaking vs. non-soaking, varied diet vs. exclusive feeding etc. And while there is a breakdown of the quality of the various ingredients commonly found in fish foods, there is no mention of Krill in this article, which is the main ingredient in NLS if I am not mistaken. Apparently even the experts can't agree.

I have noticed that they, as well as most who have responded to this thread, aren't too high on the frozen foods which is something I have been feeding along with the Hikari. I may eliminate that based on what I am learning.

What do most of you feel about feeding chopped fillets such as flounder, tilapia, salmon, ect. along with one of the quality pellets? I can usually find packs of frozen fillets fairly cheap at the grocery store and I can't imagine why this wouldn't be a healthy addition to the diet.

Sounds like a coin toss on which pellet to use as long as you go with one of the higher end brands.

What is the general oppinion on Tetra?

I feed a staple of Hikari, New Life Spectrum, Hai Feng and HBH Spirulina depending on who I'm feeding. I tried feeding Tetra and I was met with a resounding "we're not gonna touch that!"

I try to give everyone a mix of at least 3 different foods a week. :screwy:

I think over all a lot of it comes down to personal opinions. Yes, there are not so good foods on the market just like anything. When it comes to the better foods I guess it's just what you think is best.

I feed frozen frozen foods to my fish everynight...they get Spirulina and omega flakes in the morning. For frozen I feed shrimp, krill, spirulina brine shrimp, and glassworms.

HBH is a brand of fish food. they makes products such as "oscar grow, oscar show, oscar bites, and african cichlid attack"
