Hi Mark,

Bactri-pond doesn't have a shelf life if it's kept in reasonable storage conditions based on the type of microbials used in the formulation.

We've tested product that's 3-4 years old and haven't seen a decrease in activity.

I think you would need to ask the manufacturer, but as you just said it's kind of pointless considering their response to Mark. I suspect that the manufacturer "guarantees" a 1 year shelf life on their spec sheet that I linked to as a safeguard of sorts, which is a common practice in the industry. Store in a cool dry place and it sounds like you're good to go for several years.

Really itching to get my delivery...! hoping tomorrow or Friday. My corner tank has developed some cyano, so I am going to see if the bactri pond has any effect on it before I try physical removal. Probably spend Friday cleaning out the canister filters and dosing once that is done.

My Bactri pond arrived today.. Thought I had a scale that would do mg.. I was wrong.. by my calculations its roughly 1.66mg of bactri pond per US Gal. I just went with 3 small pinches in the 180 and 1 pinch each in the 55's, and much smaller in the 15 and 20. Looks like I will have a ton to test out the shelf life..

I know its only 48 hrs but I have seen no change in any of my tanks since the first dose.

What were you expecting to see?

Bacillus spores aren't some kind of magical silver bullet. First off, they will take some time to establish themselves in a tank, and then will basically only work in the background. For the most part I personally only use them to keep the organics down in my filter media between cleaning. Just as I use pothos to help keep my nitrates lower between water changes. Both work together to keep my maintenance at a more manageable level.

Hey I would like to thank you for sharing this information rd. Years ago I saw my lfs used rid-x in his tanks but never bought into it until reading your thread a long while back.

I have been using rid-x for a while... and I would like to share my experience and my results. I used to dose 1 tsb per 50 gallons and it was great but I always wondered if it was a bit excessive as the wooden shaves would build up at the corners of my tanks. I stumbled upon a product called biozyme and its literally the same thing.

I did buy the fresh water one and it says live nitrifying bacteria which I found is false. By setting up two ten gallon tanks with the same hob they literally took the same amount of time to take down ammonia and nitrite to 0. The cycle processes did take a bit over a month with bottled ammonia with dosages at 2ppm to start and then keeping a stable level of 1ppm until it could cycle it to 0 within 24 hours. This isn't the most scientific study yet I just wanted to see if it does help to cycle and I found that it didn't aid in ammonia and nitrite conversion.

They smell identical and look exactly the same. Their recommended dosage is 1/2 tsp for each 50 gallons to lower nitrates and my nitrates aren't any lower when the dosage is at 1/2 tsp per 50 gallons. I am lightly stocked as all my fish have their own tanks and good filtration but just a heads up in dosages. I do recommend the first week or two to be 1 tsp per 50 gallons to help it get going though.

Why don't you just cover the tanks with a thick blanket for a week and get a strong airpump? That will surly get rid of the cyanobacteria.
