Nice barbs, they are atlus you say? The difference is the dorsal fin lacking red? Or is it the tail having less black? I hear they get smaller, about 8-9 inches.

How big are they now? Based on your tape measure I would say a little over 5 inches each.

Well, sticking the tape measure in front of the tank was the most humane way I could think of to measure them, although not very successful since they're hanging back away from the front of the tank a bit. The largest of the group is over 7" (tail included) long, but I haven't wrestled her(?) into a net since sometime in July, (s)he's likely grown some. I'll have a go at her in just a few minutes and post pics in a bit.

I'd say the smallest of the set is 5".

The differences between B. schwanenfeldii and B. altus: B. altus (aka Red-tail tinfoil) does have a smaller adult size. They tend to be a warmer overall body color (darker, greyish) than B. schwanenfeldii, do not have the sharply defined black stripes in their tails, and do not have any distinct red patches in their dorsal fins (I say 'distinct' because my largest out of the set has a light dusting of rust red on the rear half of her dorsal fin).

my 11 year old 12" tinfoils in my 65 (under my old 90)

don't have them anymore though.

That lemon-finned barb gets me every time I see it; I never get tired of these pics. Love the dark edges of the scales. :)

*grins* Already seen and commented, but I don't mind going by to look again. ;>

Heres mine, the female and the larger male are both about 6 or so years old, the largest one the female is maybe 16/16inchs long, and nearly as deep.

We lost two while on holiday and had our one and only PH crash.

The smallest one is a rescue from a small tank, he was on his own bless him.

She makes the Oscars look small, and theyre full grown, the two males arent scitish at all, but she tends to be a bit scittish, if you see she has torn some scales off her side atm where she flew upwards and hit the cover glass, the BOOM she makes sometimes

amazing. I have never seen normal red tinfoils that big. totally awesome!

Tbh dont have any around to compare so wasnt aware of them being any bigger than average.

And have only recently started checking fish out online as I set the tank up like 8 years ago and have mostly the same fish the whole time :grinno:

That is one HUGE barb.

I hope mine eventually get at least 12 inches...
