Not sure if you have mentioned this before, but do you cut back the vines at all?

Actually I do. I just did. I prune and train the vines to loop around each in order to make the plants as compact as possible. I have them on a floating tray in the sump. Roots are >12 inches average. -FM

Quick Question.... Are the plants actually in/on the water or do you just hang them above the water?

I admitedly haven't read the entire thread, but I will when I get the time. This type of system has been used in agriculture/aquaculture for some time now. It is called an aquaponic system. There are many ways to set it up and lots of information out there about it. Tilapia, baramundi, catfish, perch, etc are rased at high densities in these systems with no ill effects. Water changes in their minds are lost nutrients for plants and they are typically not done. You would lose water through evaporation/transporation that would need to be topped off which would replace most of your salts and carbonates. Try food plants like herbs and lettuce, you just may have to alter the setup of your planted section. I have to ready to educate the youth, but there is a lot more I would like to share later.

I placed the vines on top of my tank, with 8 or so inches sticking into the tank. The submerged sections of vines soon send out roots into the water. Lighting is just ambient room light. There is a window near my tank. I do hae 2 fluorescent strip lights on top of the tank but these don't provide much lighting for the plants.

Do you have any photos of your setup? I bought some baby pothos and I have them suspended above my tank on some eggcrate with what looks to be the stems barely in the water... I've had like 3 plants die on me so far and I must be doing something wrong, lol. I thought that being submerged would kill the plants?
