Upcoming Movies and TV shows

I remember the original King Kong, although it was already an old movie when I was a kid. The stop-motion animation used was incredible for its time, but already pretty dated by the 1960's when I first saw it. The guy who pioneered that technique was Willis O'Brien...and he coached and mentored another huge animation superstar, Ray Harryhausen.

Harryhausen did a boatload of films, using the stop-motion animation technique but much more sophisticated than in O'Brien's day. This was the guy whose movies I grew up watching and re-watching. Jason and the Argonauts...the Sinbad movies...The Valley of Gwangi...The Beast from 20,000 Fathoms...Mighty Joe Young...20 Million Miles to Earth...the list goes on and on. Ridiculous and campy by today's standards, of course...but, wow, were they fun back in the day. :)

No better way back then to spend a rainy Sunday afternoon than watching goofy sci-fi and horror movies with my dad. As a kid, my favourite afternoon schlock-movie host was Sir Graves Ghastly, who was eventually...and thoroughly!...replaced by the inimitable Elvira, Mistress of the Dark. After her show sadly ended, we morphed to Ron Sweed, alias The Ghoul...but it was never the same any more. Only kids can truly appreciate the innocent nonsense of shows like those. :)

Are they any good these Dune movies? I can get them both, the 2021 and the 2023 films, but these futuristic type space movies aren't usually my cup of tea.

I didn't even know there was a 2023 follow-up movie! I'm going to hunt it down for sure.

They may not be my cup of tea...but they are definitely my mug of java! :) I love a good sci-fi flick...as well as a lot of not-so-good ones...:)

I remember a lot of those shows you mentioned, some I've never heard of. Sinbad and Jason and the Argonauts were favourites of mine from a movie perspective.

The regular sci-fi show of the day though which was immensely popular was Dr Who. Brilliant at the time. If you watch them now you just can't get past the awful acting, wobbly cardboard sets and plastic monsters! Lol.

I thought it was already out from the info I've seen? My mistake, I misread it. I just saw 2021 and 2023. But of course 2023 isn't over yet! Makes sense now.

Yes dune 2 is getting all the imax screens here in the states which is causing quite a stir because marvels latest craptacular is getting squeezed out.

I think i mightve already talked about this a few hundred posts ago in this thread, but if the movies follow the novels as closely as the first one the second installment will actually be quite a bit more whimsical aka "out there" than the first.

You mentioned a dislike of krakens so im sorry to tell you the sandworms of dune (basically miles-long hyperintelligent terrestrial transdimensional bobbit worms) become more and more keynote as the story progresses.

I always liked those old claymation flicks. I cant remember which sinbad movie or maybe it was jason, but me and my cousins were literally jumping up and down cheering for the griffon and we were all devastated when the cyclops eviscerated him.

Haha i believe they are autotrophs of some cosmic variety, living in symbiosis with the planet somehow, feeding off of the energy in the sand. The novels have quite a bit of lore to keep up with and its been years but i do know the sandworms are central to the whole storyline.
