Which is a better cichlids overall, Umbee or Dovii?

Regarding the size (according to fishing-worldrecords.com):

Biggest Umbee ever caught was 10 lb and 8 oz, 24" inches in length. Caught in Rio Yanacue, Colombia by Alejandro Linares:

I've never owned a Dovii nor do I want to... but the Umbee I have is a really cool fish. Just really shy because he's still small.

The umbee looks way bigger to me.

since your doing a solo fish you should go umbee. if you were doing a pair ive noticed doviis are much better in pairs compared to umbees. my dovii pair was great together and never had any problems. and my male umbee is probably gonna end up a bachelor. hes already killed one female and doesnt seem to like the second one any better than the first and this is in a 8x30" tank so its not cause the tanks too small. but he always flares me when i get too close and his trailers and colors seem to get better daily. not many big umbees out there either so its on the rarer side of the fence but i really dont think youll go wrong with either.

That is a tough question. I have had my WC pair of Dovii for almost a year, they are about 2 years old now. My male is easily 15"+ and my female is a beast, coming in around 11". Their personality and interaction is awesome. My male gets more blue everyday. No attacking me when I clean, they just go hang out in the corner.

I also have a pair of Umbee. Male is about 10" and female 6". Both are barely a year old, and only the male comes out to see me when I come around. I had him in the same tank with 5 females and he chose this one. She is a beaut. He too gets even more blue as he gets larger. He is currently in a tank in my fish room, while my Dovii gets to hang out in the living room. But hopefully soon, I will get the Dovii into an even larger tank in the living room, and put the Umbee in the Dovii old tank. Have them side by side so that they see each other.

Sorry I kinda wandered there. For me right now, I would say Dovii. But who knows, once my Umbee hits 2 years and 15"+, I may be changing my mind. Both of my pairs are friendly, they dont attack me when cleaning, and they are very personable.

I definitely choose either one over my Festae pair any day of the week.

may i add that his dovii pair is borderline on the rediculous. not fair to other dovii pairs out there:D

can you keep other fish with either in a large tank ie over 500 gallons? i heard they were single type fish even in very large aquariums

My Dovii have never shared a tank, so I probably wouldn't recommend it. As for my Umbee pair. They shared their tank with a breeding pair of 7" Jags. The Jags spawned several times, and stayed to their side of the tank, and the Umbee stayed on theirs. Once my Umbee spawned, it was a different story, he started taking on both Jags. I Quickly removed the Jags. Really couldnt tell which fish was in more danger. The Jags fought as a team, while the Umbee male was on his own.

Long story short. Keeping them with others while young should be OK. Once they pair up or grow up, better be careful.
