Which is a better cichlids overall, Umbee or Dovii?

My Dovii have never shared a tank, so I probably wouldn't recommend it. As for my Umbee pair. They shared their tank with a breeding pair of 7" Jags. The Jags spawned several times, and stayed to their side of the tank, and the Umbee stayed on theirs. Once my Umbee spawned, it was a different story, he started taking on both Jags. I Quickly removed the Jags. Really couldnt tell which fish was in more danger. The Jags fought as a team, while the Umbee male was on his own.

Long story short. Keeping them with others while young should be OK. Once they pair up or grow up, better be careful.

Got any pics? Sounds like some great fish. Yea I would say all bets are off when they mature.......12" or 18" Umbee and Dovii won't play nice. If you have a huge tank they may not kill everything.......I have seen in a public aquarium a monster 24" dovii own half a tank. I would guess it was 20' or more and 6' deep.

I want to see some pictures of the Umbee's damn. I want an umbee really bad

I have never owned a dovii but assume and have heard they are very similar to Jags which I have had a lot of just more aggro and my umbees are way more owner responsive and active buy the Parachromis are better parents/ pairs in my opinion but as a solo fish nothing beats an umbee they are like a red devil on steroids and are always out and about

Also my rapps male grew from 3 inches april1 to 11 inches today October 22 so that is very fast growth even for a cichlid

I sold my Jags to Fishman, he may add some pics of them, I will look for some good photos of my Umbee.

I have both, I don't know if I could say I like one over the other more. I'll give some point about both though.

My Umbee came around much sooner then my Dovii. The Umbee was in my face flaring and whipping at me at around 6" or so.

The Dovii was skittish for a lot longer so it takes more patients.

The Umbee swims a lot more. Seems to interact with me a little more then just attacking me like my Dovii.

Love the trailers on my Umbee and he only looks better and better and far as color and fins with age.

Dovii has great color and is a nut.

Both are always aware of what is going on in the room and quick to investigate it. Both think there tank and space around it is there's.

Umbee had balls at 7" when tank cleaning took place attacking the python early on.

I like having them both. A 180 is to small for the life of either male but good for a few years. Umbee will need more room to swim in the long run. I know Mel O a member here measured his Umbee at 24" and his Dovii is around the same. He gives great care and has large tanks to properly house both. Most think 20" or under is what they will attain most often.......I think it's due to water conditions and tank size.

You have a male umbee ?

Post a few photos of that dude.

After seeing your dovii and jag , I can only imagine how stunning your umbee must be.

Well you all know where i stand on this decision:naughty: But that doesnt mean that i still dont have a spot in my heart and fish room for a Dovii. ever since i started keeping larger cichlids, Dovii was the first and has always been in one or more of my tanks. And even today i still have one grow out from the Kraken, he's about 4". LOL but lately Umbees have ruled my fish room. I agree with Nwatson as far as the comparisons go between the two.
if you have room for both then get both, if not then try Umbees since youve already had dovii. and then youll know for yourself. Here is a couple pics of my big boy Monster X at 11"
