Well I love Uaru! Need a bit higher temp and at least when young need to be in groups, but they have great personality and looks. Maybe I have just gotten lucky, but all the GTs I have had weren't terrors at all. I'd be comfortable putting them in a tank like that. This tank would also open up have Syns as well, because IME they are pretty peaceful for a CA, and though they don't have tons of personality they are just gorgeous.

Both GTs I've had have killed/tried to kill any similarly or smaller sized cichlids I've kept with them

Hadn't realized synspilums were boring, I haven't kept one of them either.
Syns aren't boring - they interact with other fish and swim and stuff, they just don't interact with people outside the tank a ton. I think in that size tank you could also do a Green Texas, and Pearsei would also be good.

If you're going 7ft tank. I'd say get a nice albino red or lemon Oscar then 60 cardinal tetras. In a 7ft tank they should all stay in a tight school and be too fast for the oscar. Should be stunning to see a giant Oscar with a cloud of tiny red and blue tetras zipping by.

Not a fan of true parrots, but I will get a Severum or two for sure, almost forgot about sevs. I'd love a GT, but don't have much faith that I'll find one that won't wreak havoc, but I may try.

I've kept chocolates, they were ok.

Any other suggestions as far as a large growing cichlid?

Like skurj suggested pearsei or bocourti.

I am keeping a juvie pearsei and these guys have tons of pearsonality. They are also not nearly as aggressive as other ca's and can be kept with sa's. If.your looking for an interactive fish.
Heres a pic of my guy. I would also say they are probably the fastest growing fish ive kept. The first pic is when i first got him. Less than two months ago.

Hmm, Pearsei is sounding pretty good, I wonder if it'd color up like that last pic without a spouse?

Cardinals are awesome, but I had 15 dissappear from a 90g in days with much smaller cichlids, so I'm not trying that again
