I used the 50 micron nylon ones in my sump when I had it running. They seem to work reasonably well and clean up nicely and easily. I just gave them a rub under some running water. This was just a short term test as I only had it running a week but it went well. I need the new tank before I set it up again.

I have attached a picture of a sump biotower I want to build. I will be using rubbermade trash cans. Pic is primitive but blue is water flow direction, red is filter sock, black is piping. Basically water flow down into filter sock which will be in sealed pvc area larger than itself. Water flows through sock, back up around edges of sock and overflows onto drip pan which then flows over the bioballs, out through the bottom which will be suspended in sump. I am trying to get good polishing with filter socks and still not have to recirculate the water over the biochamber which will be pretty tall. Let me know what you think.

So I have used the socks for a while now. For a few weeks the socks clogged really fast because I added a wood eating pleco. Now I removed him everything back to normal. I would say my normal schedule with 200 Micron socks is one month. There is some sediment in the sump but I get that with non sock setup as well.

Has anyone tried the threaded filter heads for socks? My sump is in a horrible to reach place, with very poor overhead clearance. I was thinking about getting them so that I wouldn't have any overflow issues, maybe get a few more days before cleaning.

Thanks

I would be worried about overflowing your tank - if enough back-pressure is built up it could cause your overflow to slow down and flood.

Anyone try the 32" socks? Tried them on my koi ponds. Don't need cleaning as often as the 16" ones.
JK47 uses them on his ray tank, apparently stingrays have human-sized bowel movements.... :nilly:
