A Filter Sock Thread

I understand bleach is the best way to clean the filter socks, but how much bleach and how much water and for how long to leave before throw in the washing machine?

I just tried this the other day for the first time because of this thread. I filled a bucket with almost 3 gallons water and poured some bleach in without measuring. It wasn't a lot, maybe half a cup or a little more. It worked great. Soaked them overnight in this solution, then rinsed off in the sink, then soaked overnight in water/prime. Drying them out now.

They look cleaner than when I washed them outside w/ the hose.

I use the washing machine and it does really good. I use to do this but after a little bit of seeing no difference vs the washing machine I stopped and really don't care for.the bleach possibly with all my expensive rays and fish. Don't think I ever had a problem with bleach just don't feel the need for it really.

I recently ordered some of the two-in-one filters,
5726K15 Polyester Extended-Life Felt Filter Bag, 50 Micron, 7"
Diameter X 16-1/2" Height
They are the 100/50 Micron filters, I accentaly got the ones with the stainless steel ring instead of the plastic, they work good for me, so far no oxidation noticed, but they are not fully submerged all the time. I just pull the inside sock inside-out when running it in the washer, and it cleans no problem.With my bio-load I change my sock every 6-8 days, but I'm running a low flow through it. I need to add another mag12 or 18 to double my flow, and put the 2nd filter in to run 2 at once.

by washing the sock in the washing machine your potentially getting rid of good bateria thats on there? Couldn't you just back flush it with water from the tank such as water from water changes?

Filter socks are really meant as mechanical-only filtration. The idea is to remove the particulate matter before the bacteria break it down and add soluble waste to the system.

By the way, didn't you used to have a dancing milk carton as an avatar? I miss it....
