I'm not sure I can give you a definite answer because according to my research and 2.5 years of experience I am wrong about the species of my fish but maybe the other guys here can help you. Maybe try to start your own thread asking piraiba or cap. and why?

It's very tough through pictures and not being hands on and personally working with the fish because these two "sister fish" are so similar. Mine was imported from a very reputable individual that has worked with the same importer in Peru for years and he had imported 3x "piraiba" and mine is the only one still alive. But according to a few people on her I have a Cap. and not a Piraiba. But in the next month or so I will be meeting with a ichthyologist and hopefully he can shed some light on the subject by personally working with the fish. This is a very debatable species at small sizes but some claim to have enough knowledge to put a 100% species ID of the fish. I just find it hard if not impossible to separate the two through pictures because the two parts that differentiate the two species are very hard if not impossible to tell through photos. But I am no pro myself I just read and research a ton about the fish I have and that's why I have my conclusion if a species ID but others opinions are different. Either way they are a great fish to own and honestly probably one of the most sensitive fish I have ever owned.
