It was crystal clear… no clouds in the sky. I could see 25 miles all the way to La Jolla Shores, and perhaps Downtown San Diego.
It's nice to take a break, put down the shovel for a moment, lean back and just bask in the beauty of nature...isn't it?

Woah! I take back all my snarky comments! Nice work!

Not sure which astonishes me more: the fact that you actually dug that out...or that you did it without giving us a progress report every ten minutes. Either way, I for one am impressed.

Just one question: that's a real shovel, right? Not a G.I.Joe action-figure shovel? :grinno:

Kidding aside, leave some shallow "shelves" around the sides for planting. Some of the nicest pond plants need shallow water.

I’m leaving that side around 4 feet and having a shelf on the other side that’s 3 feet. Too many coyotes and herons for a shallow shelf

Credit where credit's due young shadow, that is some stellar work right there, especially using what I can only describe as an ear wax remover!! I thought in the state's everything was super sized....obviously not shovels!!

It looks like you have a very thin layer of topsoil on sand/clay there, is that right?

Our back garden is pretty much the same, about 14" of lovely top soil over damn clay, horrible stuff.

Again, good work, keep at it.

You guys are getting topsoil? Maybe 3-4 inches before it’s all clay by me.

One word sums up the blighty outside climate at the minute, and that word will remain until next spring.....miserable!

It's also at this time of year that my wood burner comes into its own. In fact, I can also use one word to sum up the inside climate.....snug! Lol.
We haven't fired up the two wood stoves yet. We usually burn about 10 cords of wood during the colder months. We're not even ready. In past years, we had this much firewood stacked

But last year we replaced the very old single paned living room windows with double paned ones. We just cannot block out the view with firewood.

Last year the firewood was hauled from the front to the back porch one wheelbarrow load at a time.....

Yeah, topsoil, a bit of sand, and then the sand-clay.

Now that is what I call an impressive pile of fuel! I simply do not have outside storage at home for such a pile so I have most of mine at work stored in the warehouse.

However, I do have a shed at home that has got a nice stockpile in.
