Great, I'll look into these. Anyone had experience of black widow / black skirt tetra and their true size? Internet says different things about size but thought these would compliment the silver dollars well?

Those are another one thatd work. I started my 180 with 6 and as the polys were added they slowly disappeared. There is 1 left he is 2 years old and maybe 2.5" long. Hes a long fin variety. I have seen some really large ones at the lfs like 4" but mine have never gotten that big. Ive kept black skirts, diamond, Columbian, Buenos Aires, throught out the years. I'd have to say max I ever got in length was maybe 3" from the diamonds and Columbians. The good thing is they are almost as tall as long so less apt to get eaten. Diamonds in good health under good lighting are stunning!

I had a good experience with a shoal of leporinus fasciatus previously, colorful easy fish but they do get big. I'd second the whiptails. They go about their business in broad daylight, not like some L's that you have to check under every rock just see if they're alive.

Thanks for the suggestions! Leporinus fasciatus are gorgeous but too big for this setup imo.

I've settled on some red columbian tetra after much research. 7 are acclimatising as I type this. Thought they'll grow to a decent size (hopefully near 3") and their colouration compliments the SDs well.

Bit worried about the pictus picking them off whilst they're small. But if they survive I'll buy another 6 or 7.

Once the setup establishing some more I'll think about adding a whiptail too!

Good choice. One of my favorites in a sa tank. Good looking fish with the red and blue!

Very happy with the choice too. How they look in the lfs is nothing like how they colour up once settled it. I just can't wait for them to get bigger.

The pictus cats picked off 2 in the first 48 hours; but since then the other 5 have been left alone. I've just added another 6 so we'll see how they go.

I'll update with photos shortly. The anubias and java moss looks amazing above the water level. They've really taken off.

Yeah at the store they are almost .....ehhh. But in every tank ive had them in they've always really colored up. I like the thick body tetras in general. African tetras are my fist love though.

So..... plants are doing amazing and I promise to upload photos soon. Fish on the other hand... not so good.

My Acara died suddenly today for no apparent reason. Water stats fine as are the rest of the inhabitants. Well except for the Columbian red fin tetra... as the pictus catfish have picked off 6 of the 13 so far! I'm now expecting the rest to get consumed.

So... not sure what to do now with stocking. May look to just increase silver dollar school size. Or I did consider growing out a silver aro. Opinions?
