Necro has been and most likely will post his costs on this tank, If there is one thing that you can count on with Necro other than being a Picture freak ;) it's that he's honest about costs and likes to share how much/little things cost... the whole point of this tank is that it's being done to show that you can get a Huge really cool tank at a fraction of the cost that others spend to make them...so no more excuses of "it's to expensive"... it's just that you might have to sell some extra blood to pay it off

Very tru I would like Necro to do a total cost rundown when it is up and running or. right before he fills. it up. I am looking into doing a large custom tank myself withing two years and gettting a general price for the project would be sweet. However I have not the room for such a large tank. I am looking at 1000 gal tops. but 600 at least.

Hahaha, lol. It's true though. I'll spend a few extra days on price comparisons if I think I can get a better deal. First thing I do is call around to everyone that I know to see if anyone might have something I can use on this, and then if not I will search for the best price in town, and then on the net. After I do that I save up the money til I have enough to get what I need. Keeping my fingers crossed that I might have $1000 to spend on what I need for this tank. That will at least get this tank to where I can do a fill test. Maybe not running, but filled is still sweet. I might do a couple of in tank bucket filters so that I can start cycling this tank right away. I've found some inline heaters for really cheap that should help out as well!!!

Don't worry that's part of the whole point in this is to show that you don't have to buy top of the line stuff just to build the tank you want. I'm going to buy pretty good stuff for pumps, and definitely going to do pot scrubbers for the filter. Going to take a me a little while to get the total ammount that I will need for all the scrubbies.

It's going to be a diy filter, and the first day on the job isn't going to be til tomorrow now. Nobody was in today so I start tomorrow. The filter might end up having it's own thread since it's going to be ghetto for some people lol. 5 or 6 55 gal barrels!!! I've already decided on using 3 5000 gph pumps, which brings it to 250 gpm. I think that's plenty of flow. Might only have like 2 to start with so around 155 gph to start with.
wow! sounds awesome. can you do me a favor and pm me a link to that thread if you make it.

im gunna start making my own filters for the rest of my tanks. why spend 300-400 bucks on a sump for a 125 when you can make one for half the cost(maybe). lol. any how ive already set up a plan for my first tank build. it's gunna be very similar to yours, if thats ok. and it will be around 100 gallons :p:D

Lol, I'll try to leave some for you. I figure 3 55 gal barrels full should do the trick! So that's about 165 gals of scrubbers. Anyone disagree?:D

I'd probably just use 3/4" plywood and skip all of the putting 2x4s together. This is for a huge tank. Anything smaller than 300 gals probably will work with just 3/4" ply. Don't qoute me on that, but I used 1" board for the 200 gal I'm building along side this project.

ya, sounds like enough scrubbers :D. have you seen that DIY trickle filter thread on here? it sounds like what your doing is similar to that.

yes, ply wood sounds better. what should i use to support the outside? or is that unnecessary?:nilly:

On the note of scrubbies, most of the dollar stores around me are no longer carrying them. My father and stepmom ordered some online to end up with the new sponge type scrubbers. They had to send them back to get the right ones, and the lady said that they are moving away from those and will not be carrying them anymore. I fear they may becoming a thing of the past... So buy them up when you see them!

That's a hell of a lot of scrubbies, have you considered plastic bird netting or snow fencing crumpled and crammed into the barrels? Might save you a bit of cash and hassle.
