bleach is fine. I would think you are ok after one bleaching overnight. Rinse tem well and let them air dry. Smell them to see if you think you need to rinse and air dry again.
Yes I will be pumping a small portion of the water return at the top that's why I don't want the hole to be that big. But if it's too small it might not break the suction. I am OK with a few return at the top. In fact I have 5 returns 4 at the bottom and 1 for the top return. most of the overflow intake is at the bottom so having some returns at the top will help circulate the water and bring down the dirt rather than just return at the botton and input or overflow also at the bottom. But I don't have control over this hole compared to all my other returns, which are all valve controlled, once its drilled it will be like that so I just want it to be minimal just enough to do its function. Check valves are ok but I dont really want to spend that much on them if there will be a cheaper alternative. And they're a bit expensive too. The size of my returns are 1.5" and the water drop is about 5' so suction is going to be strong. I drilled a 3/8" D hole on the top return. Is that going to be enough?Danh;1184571; said:I hole at the top to break the suction? Sounds like you will just pump out of that hole, rather than into the tank. I'd just put a few check valves in there to be safe. It depends on what pumps as to what size returns are optimal.
Thanks I'll try to clean again the weeds(hope they're dead and easy to take out now). Its still cold up here to go out If it gets warmer in the afternoon Ill clean themDanh;1184576; said:bleach is fine. I would think you are ok after one bleaching overnight. How big should my holes be on the returns (1.5" pipe)so as to cut off the back flow when my pump turned off?. 4 of my returns are all the way to the bottom so when I shut of the pump it will suck all my water all the way down to the bottom of the tank unless I have a hole at the top to break the suction. How big do you think my holes at the upper pipes should be?
Bleach is fine, you can use a little dish soap to help break down the bleach if they still smell, just rise very well again.arl;1184563; said:Another question regarding using bleach..... last saturday we went to a lake nearby to pick up some rocks. Most of the rocks that I pick have weeds on the them so when we got home I placed them all in a plastic bin and put bleach on them. This morning I changed the water and cleaned the rocks a bit. How long or how many times the I have to change the water before the rocks be OK for the tank. Was that a stupid move to put bleach on the rocks?
Cool!! I am OK with as much as 3/8". But it is only 1 hole per pipe return (hope you didn't mean I'll have to put several holes). The hole will be above water level at all time. Only draw back is it will create splashes. I might make water slides or something to eliminate it, but its not really abig deal. My sump is almost as big as the tank so I am ok for maybe as much as 1 minute delay/back flow before total cut off.Dr Joe;1188338; said:.25" 90* apart just below the lowest usable water level (considering what the sump will hold also)

Put them in a clean bucket, fill with water wait 2 hrs and do a chlorine test (test water before for a baseline) if your still concerned.
