Wow im impressed with your wood!

Is it safe to pick any wood for an aquarium as our house backs onto the woods so i wouldnt be getting the funny looks hopefully.

you're making me blush!

Don't really know if all woods are safe, i assume in principal, if the wood is very well seasoned, either drift wood or lying on the ground then yes? definitely check it for night crawlers, hornets etc. dont want one of those waking up unexpected! I think i will coat mine, but i'm trying to rack my brains as to a suitable method to stop it floating without coating it with anything. maybe wire i big rock on the bottom or something. any closer with your building plans steve?

Hmmm ok, i was thinking of taking the land rover down the beach and finding a huge lump of roots washed up as drift wood, there's a beach near me that normally has a good supply, just difficult to get down to.

More coats of sealant the better!

Lol i couldnt resist.

I had a bit of wood that wouldnt sink so i drilled through a 150mm square piece of slate and then put a stainless steel screw in it and screwed it to the bottom of the wood and then buried the slate in the sand and a few months later i took the slate off and put the wood back in.

As for our plans,we are just getting quotes for the extension at the minute while we wait for the PP to go through hopefully, the quotes range from £10k to £23.5k lol.

good thinking, like that idea, i could get some slate floor tiles off a job at some point, that would do it i guess. Cheers steve.

Wish you were closer i could recommend a couple of companies for your extension who i work with off and on. big difference between 10k and 20 odd! blimey :screwy:

Progress report.

Good news so far, she's holding water. filled the filter up tonight, its 22" deep to the top of the over flow rim from the main tank, not a drip in sight......so far.

Does anyone think it would be a good idea to pop a heater in the filter to check it for expansion or anything?
Happy days, sounding good.

Can't hurt to give the heater a go. After my little experience i'll be trying future builds through a whole range of temperature extremes before i declare them water tight.
