Discus are amazing.
I was going to get some, but my water is not suitable, and I didn't feel like spending more ££ on the water treatments etc than the fish!
So I went the Angel route instead. Not as nice as Discus, but am not complaining. They are still nice in their own way.

i like both, but if i had to pick. it would be angels, mainly because of altums. and discus are easy to care, atleast to me. im not sure why most people say they're hard and stuff. i believe people say discus are hard to maintain because they start off with a bad source that sells unhealthy discus. buy from a reliable source that sells healthy and you will not have many problems. and not to be mean or anything. but a lot of people on here that i've seen that has sick discus and run into problems. most of those discus i've seen that they post pics of, all look stunted and or they are bad quality and they think they're nice. and they think discus are hard....because they start off with poor quality discus.

Agree.
I don't think Discus are difficult. As you say, if you buy good quality Discus to start, that is a good basis.
But I think water quality is very important too. My water would possibly just be ok for them. Especially tank bred ones in similar conditions. But I feared that every time I had some sort of health problem, it would always come down to the fact that my water was too hard with a high ph.

i just like angelfish better.. discus just don't do it for me. my all time favorite angelfish is a true altum. hands down. MY opinion..

+1 for altums if you can find them. Beautiful fins.

I have had angels in the past and loved them. my current tank was originally to be an altum biotope, but I grew tired of waiting for someone who had them. discus were'nt an option because I was reading all those old myths about soft water, low ph, and so on. just for kicks I got on simplydiscus.com, and learned that they are not much harder to keep than any other fish. since my tank was perfect for wilds I went that route. 9 months later and all is well. my ph is a steady 7.6 and a little hard. wc's are straight from the tap with prime added. so much for myths. as much as I love angels, I think I made the right decision.

I have both angels and discus. I love discus and will always love discus. However, even a high quality discus is more high maintenance and unforgiving than most angels. So, in my experience, my angels were not really much cheaper, but easier to care for in the lonjg run.

I love both fish, but would have to vote for discus. They are just amazing fish. To the OP if your having a hard time deciding, lots of people keep discus and angels together.
