Aquarium causing basement to smell?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
To the people using carbon to remove the smell from there tanks do a water change! A healthy tank doesn't need carbon and shouldn't smell, there's no reason to use carbon but to remove meds.

+1 Healthy Tanks do NOT smell.. Something in the overall system is not working right.

Don't give up, you'll get it.

I left a bag of market shrimp in my basement once, that smell was not nice.....

yeah i dont feed mass often.. but when i do i get a "meaty, fishy" smell going on in my tanks... stop feeding the mass for a few days and do a good water change during that time and see if it helps... im also against anything that " masks" or hides smells ect... the smell is there for a reason. ide also rule out mold since you say you have humidity issues... that alone would have made me get a dehumidifier asap... basements are notoriouse for mold. if you trouble shoot the aquarium and cant find anything that would be my next investigation.

could just be your significan other being dramatic.... Ive had that problem before... Also Ive had a tank cycleing that smelled.... But thato nly lasted a few days till everything leveld out...

I know a number of people that stopped feeding massivore for this very reason, not because they weren't happy with the results they were getting in growth etc - they simply couldn't stand the funky stank from the food.

It's the humidity. My dehumidifier died this Summer and the house started smelling. As soon as the new dehumidifier ran for a couple of hours the smell was gone. Even though Autumn is here, your basement is still likely humid. Basements without aquariums require dehumidifiers to stay dry & free of that musty smell. For basements with aquariums, dehumidifiers are a must. Get one. You'll be glad you did.

I guess that would depend on the humidity level. My basement never takes on any kind of odor, and I'm pushing a LOT more water than the OP is. Even at humidity levels in the 70% range, no noticeable odors whatsoever. Then again I don't have heavily stocked tanks, I do large frequent water changes, and I don't feed massivore. :)

i agree that massivore and carni sticks stink up the water weather the fish eat it all or not. i always remove excess food right away and found that both of them stink to high hell.
