 i've still got a huge swarm of fry after 2 days and this morning it looked like there was still a ton. usually they're half gone by now. im feeding hakari baby's first bites so well see how that goes.

I got a jar of "Ocean Nutrition Instant Baby Brine Shrimp" yesterday. Tiny little jar cost $12 :(

On a brighter note, the female released fry this morning. Didn't have much time but did see a few wigglers :).

well I don't have fry yet, and I'm not giving up :)

A little recap:

1st time: kept the pair together in the 220 with a divider...the male beat the crap out of the female when she was holding....moved the male to the other side of the divider with other fish....female let fry out too early....they swam to the other side of the divider and got eaten

2nd time: kept female alone in the 220 with a divider when she was holding....netted her out at night to strip the fry....but she reacted quite violently all the fry died during the struggle

3rd time: saw the pair courting and move them to a 55 all by themselves. The male promptly beat the crap out of the female and almost killed her. Moved female back to the 220, and also the male a couple of weeks later. They didn't "speak" for a long time. Spawning got "canceled".

4th time: They spawned again yesterday on the same spot. This time I didn't do anything, and both parents seem to be doing a good job protecting the eggs. Will post pics soon. Not sure what to do - running out of options.... ideas??

Depends on what you want to do. Do you want to raise fry or do you just want to let the parents do there thing? I would keep a very close eye on the male. There's a good chance he will want to breed again and give the female another beating. Personally I'd strip the fry and raise them seperate.

Well, both :D I'm hoping to watch the parents take care of the fry, and also raise some...

One thing I haven't done before is to leave the parents and fry with other fish. Maybe this would force the male to be more protective, and the female to hold longer? Stripping balzanii is extremely easy, but these guys are bigger and more willing to "fight"...I guess I'll have to at some point...

Leave them alone and let them do their thing. If all that is in there are the two Geophagus and the Acarichthys growouts, they will be fine. If these are wild fish they might surprise you how well they can do if left to their own devices. The male sounds aggressive and that will be good for keeping the other fish away and it won't be too tough to do so with Geos and young heckellii. You can at least determine their abilities and base future decisions on that. I think it would be a shame to strip them.
