04/12/09 8 days post spawn.
MAJOR NEW DEVELOPMENT.
Checked the tank around noon and was stunned to see the females severely beaten up. The male almost killed her. She was hiding in a corner and essentially gave up. The male took a few more "bites" as I was watching and she didn't even move. Immediately move the male over to the other side of the divider. She was on her side for the next half an hour. I thought she was going to die for sure
She got up and swam around in the afternoon, and ate quite a few pellets when I fed the other fish. I was in horror to see her breathing with her mouth open like all other fish, and thought she had eaten the fry.
Then, I noticed something moving on the bottom....wrigglers!

There were very very few, probably only around a dozen. Remember not all the eggs were picked up so not too many to start with.
She would pick them up if I get too close to the tank, and spit them back out in just a few seconds. After dinner I noticed some wigglers seem to be missing. I started to think maybe I should get the fry out. When I was standing there thinking, one baby sev swam across the divider and got eaten immediately by a 6" Geo. altifrons. I run to get the hose and a bucket, and managed rescue only 4 - one died and three were still swimming - they are in a plastic container floating on the surface.
My "breeding cage" is coming Tuesday....not sure if they'll make it that far
A few pics of the fry:
