Breeding Journal - Heros sp. Atabapo (mouthbrooding severum) PIC LOAD!!

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Awesome!

Thanks everybody!

The female started eating pellets yesterday :(. A lot slower than she used to but did eat a few. When she's not eating she still keeps her mouth shut, and seems to be chewing something constantly.

I'm guessing that she probably swallowed the fry :(......but is it possible that a mouthbrooder can eat when it's holding?

04/12/09 8 days post spawn.

MAJOR NEW DEVELOPMENT.

Checked the tank around noon and was stunned to see the females severely beaten up. The male almost killed her. She was hiding in a corner and essentially gave up. The male took a few more "bites" as I was watching and she didn't even move. Immediately move the male over to the other side of the divider. She was on her side for the next half an hour. I thought she was going to die for sure :(

She got up and swam around in the afternoon, and ate quite a few pellets when I fed the other fish. I was in horror to see her breathing with her mouth open like all other fish, and thought she had eaten the fry.

Then, I noticed something moving on the bottom....wrigglers! :D:D There were very very few, probably only around a dozen. Remember not all the eggs were picked up so not too many to start with.

She would pick them up if I get too close to the tank, and spit them back out in just a few seconds. After dinner I noticed some wigglers seem to be missing. I started to think maybe I should get the fry out. When I was standing there thinking, one baby sev swam across the divider and got eaten immediately by a 6" Geo. altifrons. I run to get the hose and a bucket, and managed rescue only 4 - one died and three were still swimming - they are in a plastic container floating on the surface.

My "breeding cage" is coming Tuesday....not sure if they'll make it that far :(

A few pics of the fry:

Hi Peter. Sorry to hear your male was such a prick... Hope the female is doing better. Are any of the fry still alive.. You can always have more fry but I would hate it if the female was badly harmed.. Knowing they are in your care I'm sure she will recover.. Too bad you can't charge him with spousal abuse:ROFL::ROFL:. Please keep us updated... Sue:D

Thanks Sue. The female is recovering....might take a little while for her fins to heal but looks like she'll make it. The three wigglers are still moving this morning... preparing a small bare bottom tank for them now...

Question - I don't have a sponge filter. Would it work if I wrap up the intake of HOB filter with something like a carbon bag? It's a pretty wimpy filter.
