building a 1000 gal concrete block monster tank

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I think I would be a little concerned that the BOTTOM of the glass will have enough downward and outward pressure to push the bolts out of the concrete.

Also do you think that the design is "structurally sound" at the bottom front? I see that you have rebar through the front blocks but the concrete you are pouring in them is basically just going to be sitting on the slab of the basement. What is to keep the bottom front from "slipping" of of the rebar?

I know these questions sound rediculous but there is going to be A LOT of pressure on that part of the tank.;)

BTW, GREAT JOB and keep it coming!!!

The rebar is embedded at least 4" into the existing concrete slab. The concrete being poured into the cores and rebar is held in place by that rebar and the downward force of the block. The glass pushing the bolts out? Not to be a jerk, but think about this a little more. Look at the sketches near the beginning of the thread. I'm not concerned about any of this. I'm using the same techniques to anchor a foundation wall to it's footer. The forces on block at the footer of a house are 10000 times what are going to be on this tank. Thanks for your concern though.

The pressure going DOWN will be 10000 times stronger but your situation differs greatly because of the amount of pressure pushing out. Also your tank will not have the added downward pressure on the TOP to help the wall from sagging outward.

looking at the outward pressures as if it were a retaining wall, wizzin's got no problems here...interlocking block. rebared and concrete filled?... it would hold wet concrete even...;)

Dude, you are seriously over thinking this. Don't be escared of the water man! :chillpill: :D

Seriously, though, have you seen this? http://www.monsterfishkeepers.com/forums/showthread.php?t=48640

That tank is literally 5 times what mine is and it's the same construction. :chillpill: :chillpill: :chillpill: :chillpill: :chillpill: :chillpill: :chillpill: :chillpill: :chillpill: :chillpill:

Actually I am overthinking this because I got a "maybe" from the missus after she see's how well your turns out. ;)

So for the sake of the rest of us.................DONT F UP!! LOL!!!

 Nice. That's part of the fun of building it. Not knowing whether it's going to work or not. If you want, I could do a rendering of what it would look like in your house to help convince her. That's what I did. This was the orignial look. Took about 5 minutes...
