thanks. I actually have the CK and the RTC is to take off of someone's hands who can no longer keep it. The aros are the only thing I'm buying. I was looking at TFDFISH's inventory. Very nice!!! I've got to get through building and then nitrogen cycle HELL first!!!

Wizzen; there are always two sides with baloney in between, like a sandwich.
But your aquaintence misremembered a lot of the SOB story; or big Johns' (Swearigen) erection , as the the building was known "in-house".
The original Crerrara mable was about 1.5" thick with about 3/8" kerfs in the center of each edge ,into which SS clips fit . The Arch forgot to seal the gap and rusty water startd staining the out side of the marble, So Amoco came up with the idea of sealing with SILICONE rubber caulk (that may be irony). The mock ups of various granites was set up at Naperville IL for weathering tests.
An Amoco engineer said (at the beginning ) " all those lines in the marble are cracks and water will get in and do freeze/thaw damage" - and that is why it was replaced.
I got a million stories.
It was the tallest building in the world for about 6 months (not counting antennas). 80 very tall stories. I worked on about 48 for a short time; got butterflys in my stomach every time I walked by a window for weeks.

A thickness of 1.5" didn't look right; so I measured my chunk. It is 1.237", so it is low for 1.25" or thick for 3 cm. It makes a good board to roll pie crust; it had to good for something.
The Arch said the marble couldn't fall; The Amoco Engr said they wanted to know what happened WHEN the marble fell. So ,they dropped a few panels from a 150' (?) crane. Most everyone was suprised when some marble panels caught the wind and sailed almost like plywood. When they hit the ground they looked like a "Splash" (per reports). One piece of splash broke a truck windshield 150' away from the crane. I heard that was very interesting for the observers standing 100' from the crane. To let a piece get away from the 1100' level was an unpleasent thought.

I thought he said one of the panels went through the roof of an adjacent building's entry? He also said he thought it was sold by amoco for somewhere in the 400million range, so it's not like they actually lost money on the whole deal anyway. $120 to build, 60 to fix... even with taxes, they'd still be in the green on the sale...

Got the block! I'm going Wed next week to get rebar, lumber and all-thread. Next Sat, my buddy is coming up (mason) and we're going to try to knock out as much as we can. Next Sat should be a picture day. I'll post pics of all the progress. I ordered the Sanitred today too. I went back and forth on color, but my wife really wanted black, so it's black.

Project cost this far:

Glass - $0.00
concrete block - $100.00 (got a deal @ $1.00 per block :naughty: )
Sanitred - $250.00
----------------------------------------
Total - $350.00

Still need:
quickrete - $100.00 +/-
rebar - $49.17
2 pumps - $190.00
lighting - $150.00
lumber - $60.00
R/O unit - $250
-------------------------------------
Grand Total - $1,149.00 +/- (I also have a $500 reserve, because I know theres other things I need)

Great to hear your project is getting started, I know it will be a little bit before you use the sanitred but I'd like some details on how well it works and how easy it is to work with.

It sounds like it's going well. What kind of pumps are you using for the filtration?
