Rusty gave me some in 2003 and they bred well for me. Mine never grew very big (4-5") but actually were OK in a community cichlid 180g tank.
I guess it just depends on the individual fish. In time I gave away to many and the colony I had left collapsed.
I thought you might have had the Nandopsis beani.
I still have adult fry from those N. haitiensis I bought at the OCA in 2008 we were both at. I bought 6 and got 2 breeding pairs. From their fry I gave about 150 away or so to stores and friends. I kept about 20 to get some more fry from and put the breeders and other fry that were left into the 15,000. In about 6 months they were wiped out by the Amphilophus citrinellus and the Parachromis managuense.
