I wish I knew about this construction before you began... There's a chemical process for mild steel called "parkerizing" that I use on all kinds of stuff. I have metal pieces you could toss in a saltwater tank and leave them there for 5 years without rust. I only say 5 as an example because I've seen raw steel sit near saltwater for 2 months rusted into powder...At this time I am having problems with my steel above the water line rusting. I built 10 access doors to feed the fish etc. and they are rusting also. I had problems with the floor above the tank after the first year because the floor materials absorbed water and weakened. I then had to replace the floor. I heat my tank with a house oil fired hot water tank. I have used 2 swimming pool heaters before this. But I had many problems 1. the first one ran great for 5 years but it had been installed improperly by the seller and caused a fire. The second one was far too big and it started leaking in the boiler after 1 and a half years. I use a 600 lb sand filter on the mega tank, the natural lava rock filtration, I don't over feed and I do about 10,000 gallon water changes every week.
Thanks for the information it sounds fantastic and I wish I knew about it when building the tank. Where do you buy it?synapse989;1379848; said:I wish I knew about this construction before you began... There's a chemical process for mild steel called "parkerizing" that I use on all kinds of stuff. I can recommend one thing since it's already completed... ..and the task is nothing to be taken lightly, but if you can clean the rust off the metal, use a brush on bedliner.
Lava rock is a great natural filter in large quantities and small bio load.Tomhankstheshark;1390186; said:I wish i had sumthin like that! The tank i have is nowhere close to as great as this!i also learned from this that lava rock is a natural filter
