It takes a year and a half to grow a red bellied pacu to that size, less for a black. There really isn't any proof that the fish is any older than that. I would say, given the circumstaces, evidence points to this fish is lucky to be older than two years old. Has anyone actually SEEN a healthy full grown black pacu in person? They look NOTHING like that. If that was a healthy full grown black pacu, there is no way in hell a 75 would stand up to it's strength for any length of time let alone 40 years.

Slowly......marking.....members......off......my........advice........list.......vendors.......list......as.......well........Are you people serious? Pacu are one of the fish that I would love to keep, but I know I don't have a space anywhere close to housing them long term. That's pathetic. He owns a fish store? To the comment of "how many millions of pacu has he outlived?" (or however it was phrased).....how many of those that he "outlived" did this guy send out his door? To go in a 75, 55, 29, 10...... Some of you ask how we can judge him knowing nothing about him? What do YOU know about him? About the truthfulness in his claims? I won't rule out that he has kept it for that long, but if true, I am ruling out his judgement, knowledge, ethics, and morals in fishkeeping.

IT'S AMAZING HOW WE ARE OFTEN SO JUDGEMENTAL . . . THE MAN DID SOMETHING RIGHT. PROOF IS IN THE FACT THAT THE FISH IS STILL ALIVE AND WELL. HALF OF US CAN BARELY KEEP A FISH ALIVE FOR 5 YEARS, EVEN WITH ALL OF OUR THEORY AND HIGH-TECH EQUIPTMENT.

I disagree.

keeping a fish that was so badly raised that it grew a deformed body is not doing something right even if the fish supposedly is 40 years old.

the fish is living. you can tell it never was thriving..

I wish I had pics of my old pacu to post.

the difference between a healthy properly grown pacu and the fish in the store is like night and day..

thats just fact.

Any vendor who knowingly sells pacu to the general uninformed public will have some answering at the pearly gates. I understand St. Peter knows quite a bit about fish...

the thing that makes no sense also is how do they know "when the fish was born"

sorry, but all pacus in the trade are wild caught.

if they meant they purchased him in 1967 fine.

but don't say he 'was born' in 1967...

Wait, aren't pacu mass farmed as a food fish?

PROTIP: That is not a black pacu.
Black pacu are like half olive green.

wiki say they are apparently, but this is very recent.

not 40 years ago :)

however, I doubt any farmed raised fish at this point make it into the aquarium trade.

most south american suppliers that I dealt with while working at the LFS had all wild caugh stock..
