Just spent like three hrs reading this entire thread from the beginning...great work. Seemingly the struggle constantly is battling out leaks. Now that itself is gonna drive any hobbyist insane. :)

That dovii is definitely a male. While females can get the blue color to an extent, the spotting throughout the unpaired fins is a dead give away.
Cheers dude, nice to get a definate answer on that one. Gotta be the most pansy male dovii on here.

That's what I thought, mine has it too. A guy who came to purchase a puppy off me insisted it was a 100% female (he apparently breeds them and was going to make a bet with me) he said that the black bar along the body and the black markings on the gill plate indicated that it was female. He said at that size a male would have lost it. I thought a female was more yellowish in the body. I hope its a male!

I would tell you where i've found some good ones at good value, but that'd just be cruel of me! Decided on what catfish you are going to go for yet?

It's herring night tonight so i'll see if i can get a good hand feeding vid and smile nicely at BigCol to drop it on youtube for everyone to see me lose fingers.

I've noticed the black bar and markings come and go depending on it's mood, sometimes they're not there at all and other times they're very obvious. I think it's a dominance/confidence/aggression thing as i've noticed my Jaguar Cichlid display similar colouring habits over the years when other fish have been added. The Dovii lost the prominent black markings once he'd settled into the tank i originally had him in, then they returned when he realised he wasn't incharge! Do you keep your Dovii with other fish?

Yeah, he is in an agressive community tank. Some of he's tank mates include jag, trimac, festae, veija, texas, red scat, pacu, arowana, bichir, gar, severum, acara, pleco/gibby, chocolate, parrot, and rainbow cichlids. He's markings do dissapear when its feeding time! lol he likes food!!! At all other times he looks just like the one in your photo, same size too. Anyway, I think he is male. Also, mine is not the killing machine everyone makes them out to be, he flares and chases some fish at times, then he gets chased. He is quite well behaved, he is even the mediator when fights break out, no fish can fight with each other, unless he starts it! He will come along and try and stop them. hehehehe. They are so funny to watch at times.

Wow, must be a big tank! Dovii personailty does seem to depend a lot on what they're kept with, mine came from a community tank in the lfs full of all kinds of different cichlids that were all the same size, wolfy was the dominant fish in there but he wasn't relentlessly harrasing everyone like some dovii do. The pecking order in the pond is weird at times and even though he does like to chase others occasionally (like yours does by the sounds of it) he's nowhere near the top of it! I've seen him take a beating off a channel cat that's smaller than him:ROFL:

The way it looks to me, the ones that get them the reputaion for being extremely aggresive are the ones kept alone or with the wrong tank mates that they can easily dominate and destroy.
