Cheap plants, less nitrate! POTHOS

I'm in the process of making a DIY hood and want to incorporate this into the hood. My idea is to have an acrylic box that is drip fed with an overflow that flows back into the tank. My question is, is a slow drip rate better or the faster the better??

Depends on the tank size but big tanks need a little more flow for the plants, you could make a DIY spray bar to incorporate water flow for the pothos. Of course you can just put the roots in your tank and be fine, I find simplicity works better!

It's just a small 35G. I was thinking of adding a small hose to the spray bar that is already there (probably the hose one uses for air stones) and have that flow into a container with the Pothos in it and that overflows back into a tank. What do you reckon?

If its a 35 just stick the roots directly in the water and the plant will grow up and out, the roots absorb the nitrate, or you can use a breeder box and put the roots in there but many people like the look of roots in their tank, plus it gives fry and baby fish cover!

That's the easiest way imo

I'll be keeping snakeheads in there so the top has to be completely covered. Which is why the pothos are going in a separate area.

Hey everyone, I'm trying to improvise a planter for my tank, but I have to keep it boxy so I can fit everything together without seams (eels).

Can a brown plastic planter I found in the garage be okay for the tank? It's a "#5" type of plastic, same as food-grade, and it's somewhat flexible, similar in feel to rubbermaid containers. Also I have a regular foodgrade container I could get more of, can those work too? (confrimation)

(I'd be poking holes big enough for roots but small enough to keep eels out)

Definitely, as long as you put holes through the bottom so the roots can be partially or fully submerged.

For sure! Like I wrote, I'll be pokinh homes all over to maximize flow, but keep eels out (and hopefully guppy fry, dont want them going in, growing, and not being able to get out )

As Strollo said it will work, you don't even need a box tho, you can just put the roots in without an enclosure! Pics when finished!

Like I mentioned though, I have eels, I'm not giving them a chance to climb up the plants and get out. I realized how long it would take to poke all the holes int he plastic, and frankly I'm a little paranoid about it (stuff on nail? was pesticides used in planter? other things touching planter? is the material REALLY safe? etc) so I think what I'm going to do is just go buy a bunch of breeder nets and do it that way. They all connect, no worries about the plastic, and the holes will be root-tight if/when they start poking out of the netting!

Boy, washing/seperating the pothos itself was a chore though. Kinda concerned about contact with the little white fertilizer lumps, though I washed them all away.
