Cheap plants, less nitrate! POTHOS

Very nice!
I'll be rockn a 4ft 4bulb t5 above mine.
Puts out killer light w/out the heat.
Love your set up Jenerik!
What else is filtering your tank?
\

Thanks. For filtration, I run a wet/dry sump and then a couple of canister filters.

I got to page 22 trying to find if anyone else asked this already:

My NO3 is at 0 (as is N02 and ammonia) because I'm not fully stocked yet (hard to make decisions). I would like to add a couple of pothos anyway because I like the looks, and as a backup for when the other monsters get in there. Will the pothos survive without the N03/ammonia?

Also, I've been thinking about getting a couple of large mats of Java fern to fill in one of my corners, and hide the sump return, and also to get rid of the last fake plant. After reading this thread, I would rather do a pothos as it would be cheaper for such a large plant, and less dense so less likely to hide fish. Has anyone submerged the pothos?

This is the corner and also a full tank shot (I'm testing the upload feature on this Android app=))

Yes, Pothos will grow on just "water" (LOL). It just grows a lot more vigorously when you have some food in there for it.

No, Pothos will not grow submerged. The stems and roots (obviously) will tolerate immersion but any leaves which spend a signifcant time under water will eventually turn to mush and rot away. You want to keep most of the plant above water.

Thanks. I have actually had that particular Peace Lilly for as long as the Mbu: Going on 4 years now. This is other thing I was going to mention with regards to growing Pothos (or whatever plants you elect to use...). They will do OK under window/PC fluor/etc. lighting but if you really want them to kick ass, you will need a lot more light than that. Those are four 70w metal halides above the tank....

The more light the plants get, the faster and more vigorously they will grow and the more vigorously they grow, the more nitrate the will pull out of the water. To put it into perspective, I basically have to prune away half the Pothos on a monthly basis and trim back a third of the Peace Lilly's leaves. Never used any fertilizer, just let the fish waste take care of that.

I heard egg shells can be used as fertilizer. I'm sure adding a few crushed up egg shells would be beneficial and they wouldn't harm the fish. But of course the dirty water is basically a fertilizer as well.

That's just calcium and maybe some phosphorus. No idea but why not? Probably won't hurt anything. Focus on the light, though. No other single thing you can do will grow better plants better then bright light.

And you will notice he has a mirror behind the four Metal Halides. That helps a LOT!

Great advice!

I had no idea how stupid my question was until I read that =))
