I find planted tanks struggle with lots of problems, I've never needed CO2 to fix something though. Without it I've experienced explosive growth, lol. Sustaining the balance in your tank is what is most difficult and CO2 adds another relative variable. I'm not against it or think its pointless but for me its not a concern, I'd rather spend the money on a good clean up crew for my tank.

I can't figure out why this is a sticky. But anyway..... I did not read the entire thread. The argument that the need for pressurized CO2 is a myth is laughable. There is not a single plant out there that does not benefit from CO2 in any form. It's the whole photosynthesis thing. And the more CO2 that is provided, in any form,it will benefit the plants. The proof is in the pics. The plants in the pics in the first post look pathetic. Take a look at plants in a tank with pressurized CO2, like it post #16. They look green and healthy. I'll take what is actually a minor expense with pressurized CO2 anytime when I want a full and healthy looking planted tank. Is pressurized CO2 necessary for all planted tanks? No. But who said it was? This was never a "myth" :screwy:

Bum, do you also think humans would do better in an enriched oxygen atmosphere or on a 15,000 cal/day diet....too much of a good thing is not always needed. Matter of fact, Liebig already said that over 150 years ago.

Humans as well as most other vertebrates can be seriously injured or killed from oxygen toxicity. The cells in your nerves, eyes, and lungs can not tolerate high concentrations of o2 well.

Plants and humans are completely different. To make the comparison is not a good argument.

Actually, oxidative catabolism (glycolysis) can be considered to be the reverse reaction of photosynthesis... And the way we burn sugar is not dissimilar to how plants use the energy they store as carbohydrates... It's more similar than you think.

I've been out of the planted tank game for a while but here's some photos of the tank I setup after the one in post #16.

WITH co2 of course ;)

Nice tank. I still have planted tanks. Ones with CO2 and ones without. Some of the ones with the CO2 have low light plants.Low light plants with CO2 will grow faster. The age of the bulbs, as well as ferts, what size of tank it is, as well as what the tank is stocked with all play factors in how well a non CO2 tank will grow. No one is saying , at least I'm not, that planted tanks need pressurized CO2. But it certainly makes the plants look fuller, healthier, and is easier to accomplish this IMO. If you don't mind taking your time with plant growth, then don't use CO2. And, in the grand scheme of keeping fish, pressurized CO2 does not cost that much. But really, when was this ever a myth?
