i actually was a little nervous how strong the face frame would be but i hung my entire weight off of the vertical side board and it didn't budge. its doubled up with the 2 inch board im using for a frame for the glass. and there is alot of screws and plenty of glue in the middle :) thanks for checkin it out ill hopefully have more up soon

got the stand pretty much done today just need to fill inbetween the 2x4's on the top and bottom to make it flush. the stand is 90x32x36tall i got the build idea from http://www.monsterfishkeepers.com/forums/showthread.php?t=293874 it went together really fast took about 2 hours. and i am only about $40 into lumber. tomorro starts the fiberglass on the face of the tank then just waiting for my zavlar. moving fast but so much more to go...

Killer pimpin can't wait to see it done. Now I just need to get off my *** and get to work so I can finish mine.

haha im having alot of fun too bad your like a hour away from me or i would come down and help you work on your giant... so if i get this all done and there is a leak on a wall or joint do i just try to pinpoint the leak and coat it with more liquid rubber? im counting on no leaks but i want to be ready if i get one. also how long are these tanks lasting and Wut do you do if you spring a leak in your house a few years down the road?

I've seen many properly built plywood fiberglass tanks outlast any glass and silicon tanks. As far as the liquid rubber we aren't going to know for sure because it's fairly new to the market but I assume it done correctly it will last just as long as any fiberglass. And yes if you do spring a leak just pinpoint it, drain the tank, dry it out completely then do some more coats.

Excuse my Noobishness, but what do you guys use to seal these homemade wooden tanks? Fiberglass?

LLooking great so far buddy, top work.

Steve

to seal the tank i am using liquid rubber but people are having troubles getting it to bond with the glass so im using badolross's idea about fiberglassing the front piece for the window. anyways to answer your question sealing the wood with liquid rubber called zavlar and fiberglass... thanks guys i got some more pictures but haven't had time to get them on here. i basically have everything ready for the rubber once it gets here

i still am in need of a great idea for a over flow box guys. i was thinking cutting a garbage can in half then painting it with the LR? im going to drill a 2inch hole on each side for the drains and a 1 inch on each side for the return piping. do you think it will handle close to 3000 gallons per hour?

Go back and revisit my build. Go to the end where I added 2 overflow boxes. I build my overflow boxes out of plywwod and sealed them with LR. This was an afterthought and had to be done while the tank was running because my original bulkheads were not moving the water I needed them to. I am pumping about 2000gph through my overflow boxes. My boxes each feed 2-1.5" pipes that join into a 3" pipes that goes to the sump. They might be able to flow another 500gph each but that would really be pushing it. I would cut slots in the backwall of the tank where you want the water level to be. I'd make the slots about 1.5" high by about a foot long. One the outside of the tank I would add overflow boxes with bulkhead fittings in the bottom of the boxes to feed the sump. My boxes are not as pretty as I would have liked them to be but this is because they were an afterthought after the tank was up and running.
