Gar Identification - Post your Gar to be ID'd HERE!!

yeah, those were really tempting...as was that other species with the lure on the snout! maybe someday when we don't have as many gars to keep track of...like when we're dead :irked:/:D

Yeah the Maculata are pretty neat too.. Really is rare to find them in that immaculate of condition. Very very impressed about that. I might just set up a 120 for a shoal of those. Dang suckers are live or nothing though which can be a bit of a PITA. Something tells me this year is going to be the year of the feeder fish no matter what though so may as well add 10 or so more mouths to feed...;)

For those around the Detroit area head over to Fantastic Fins and check them out. Need directions let me know. Really might be a one of a kind chance if your interested in these guys. I have never seen these as healthy and in as good of shape as these they just got in.

While what MFK probably needs is a "Reputation System" (to clearly identify experts), but the closest substitute is the count of total posts you see next to each user..For instance, my "total" is in the early 400's, you are in the 280's.. While Solomon (E_Americanus), Alex (Xander), Michael (Madding) and others are in the thousands...

This implies, I am a newbie and these guys are the veterans.. So, if I (or some other newbie like me) expresses an opinion which is contrary to what the veterans say.. go with the veterans' opinions and not the newbie's!

Just my 2 cents.

Good luck with that great looking Florida gar.

Sid

reputation system is ****. i have been on forums that use reputation system and it is HORRIBLE. post count is not a fantastic way of telling either. a lot of ppl post crap to chalk up posts. best way is to spend time reading posts & see for yourself who has some idea of what he or she is saying:)

Post count is shady because even in this very sub-forum there are extremely knowledgeable members who are 1) new to this forum but not the hobby or 2) have had past MFK usernames in the thousands but use a new one now.

Point taken... Pejelajarto (Richard) is one of the experts with low post count which contradicts that "high post-count = more experienced" theory..

Seems like there is no easy way besides what Alex stated above.. "spend time reading posts...."

Moving on.. :)

yup, that about sums it up! that and keeping in mind the answer to one's question in this particular thread is "you have a Florida gar" 9/10 times :D

My boyfriend bought me this adorable monster to be at 3 1/2 inches, the LFS says he is an Alligator Gar. I'm not so sure as others are telling me Florida or Tropical Gar. I just want to make sure!
