Florida gar is different from alligator gar? Probly a stupid question

Thanks for your input Scott. I purchased this gar as a florida, but there are a couple things that have me questioning this ID. The pattern being the main one. A florida this size usually would have lost the lateral stripe this gar has. The next thing is that this gars mouth is longer than the similarly sized floridas it's housed with. This doesn't show to well in the photos though.
n/p from all my floridas there has been some veriation in the jaw length and pattern to include the change over. from the pic i would guess that gar to be around 8-9" or so. mine at the same size and even larger still have had that line. in fact my 16" florida still kinda has it but in the form of spots. they are just darker and still in a linniar pattern. i also think that line has more to do with age then size. i have had some gars just smoke others in first year growth. this one may still be younger then others at its size. another possibility is that it could ha a slight deformity that makes the jaw longer but narrower. one of my fl growouts has one side o its face a little pushed in. cant really see it unless you look for it. that affected it jaw angle and length. just some additional thoughts.

I've noticed snout length variation far more in wild caught floridas. Farm raised seem to have snouts that differ less. The 18 floridas this gar is housed with are all likely to be farm raised (3 were purchased secondhand so I can't be 100% sure on source), whereas I'm not sure if this is a wild caught individual or not. Even so the nose is longer than the other floridas.
I'm estimating this gar's length to be about 10". This is based on measurement of the longnose it's in with which is 14" and unlikely to do any growing as it's already 7. I know what you mean when you talk about some still having that line for the pattern. I have a couple with that, but this seems different to me. The only gar with a similar pattern that I have is the longnose this gar is housed with IMO.
I agree with you about age vs. size as far as juvenile pattern. With that in mind, when I received this gar it was pretty thin. Best guess would be that if it's anything it's a little undersized for it's age. This could cause some odd growth and could explain the longer jaw.
Stick the longnose gar in a separate aquarium with warmer water and power-feed it; I bet that you might be able to jump start its growth again. It worked with the one gar that was a bit small for its age that I used to have although it wasn't quite as old as that one.
I had kinda been doing this. Was being powerfed and still is. As far as heat I had been running most of the tanks this gars been in on the warmer side. At this time not as warm but still upper 70s. Haven't noticed any increase in growth but there has been a lot of weight put on and some healing of it's fins.
Ah, okay. Hopefully it will hit a growth spurt once it's all healed.
I hope so, but even if it stays this size I wouldn't be too upset.
What's your thoughts on my new gar Ryan?
