That's a Florida gar.

I recommend that you avoid making that purchase as all true gars are illegal in California.

Yeah thanks for the info ,saw some other threads and the stickies with legalities. Looks like they get to big anyways I only have a 140 right now.

I just picked up what was labeled as a "shortnose gar"
Doesanyone have a pic of a juvelile so i know this is what i
purchased. A pic of an adult one would be awesome too, so i
could see what it will look like when grown up.

thx in advance

HI Guys,

A local fish guy has several gar. They were supposed to be florida and spotted. The reason for my post, some of them (about half) were yellowish (or brown) in color with spotting looking like fla gar. The others were gray with dark spots on them. I wasnt sure if this was just variation in the fla gar or if they could be spotted. I can try and get pics, didn't have my camera on me when I was there though.

Thanks,
Mark

The yellowish ones with spots sound like alligator gars, and the gray ones with spots sound like Florida gars. I highly doubt that he has true spotted gars as they are extremely rare in the hobby; most, if not all, "spotted gars" in stores are just mislabeled Florida gars or even alligator gars.

Pictures will greatly help, so please get some of those gars if at all possible.

I actually spent time last night and tonight reading every page of this thread...I admit that I skimmed the last 15 pages or so and just looked at the pics and responses. But here is my gar...Florida...I assume.
