the patterns/spots are not very clear because it just done breeding, I saw the female was like gray on both side with spot only at the top of the head and a few pieces left on the back.
if it is "Florida gar" then there is an invasion going on here with those gars came from stupid fish keepers around here!you just had to go and put your foot in your mouth not even a dozen posts later....i was just letting you know were i was comming from about your posts.
nice "florida gar" i also would like to know how you got it because i am looking for ways to convince the gars up here to get caught.

I sex them by what I been seeing in the last few days, there were 3-4 smaller gars following that big gar when i saw them yesterday so I assumed the big fish is the female and those followers are male. The big gar was also a lot fatter than those that follow it.i assume you are judging sex ID by the number or size of the individuals in the group? that being said, remember that generally pattern (size of spots, etc etc) is not a solid ID for the difference between FLG/SPG...your locality def indicates it as SPG, better photos will probably help when you get them. also, those measurements (gill cover to eye, etc etc) are useless in terms of ID'ing the species from FLG; thanks for posting them though, and that's def a nice specimen! looking forward to further pics and additional specimens!--

thanks, hope I can raise them and what do they usually look like?based on that information you would be correct. keep check on the spots where they are gathering/spawning...those are the areas where you should check the immediate shoreline in a week or two for YOY fish--
