I found this on Florida gars which might help people identify their gars.

Other gars, except for spotted gars, have spots on the fins and usually on the posterior part of the body. They can be distinguished from other gars, such as spotted gars, by the distance from the front of the eye to the back of the gill cover. In Florida gars, the distance is less than two-thirds the length of the snout. In spotted gars, the distance is more than two-thirds the length of the snout.

I don't really understand what is the meaning of the first sentence, but as far as I understand it, that is completely wrong!

What kind is this was told Florida Gator Gar it is usually pretty dark but sometimes lightens up quite a bit

I would say it is a gator gar. Was it this dark when you first got it? if it is then you might got a rare black gar or you could called it a melanistic gator gar.

As HungDang said it is a gator gar. As far as colouration many gators show a dark colouration like this. It's pretty normal. I would look into a healthier diet for the fish.

What about mine, they were sold to me as "marbled spotted gar" I think they are Florida gar but not sure. Thanks. I got them from azgardens.com"Arizona aquatic gardens"and they came in with fin rot that I've been battling, but seems to be getting better. The lighter color one also has a scrape on his head from hitting it on some decoration I have since removed from the tank. Thanks again
