Hey, just got a Gar not too long ago, not sure what it is. Guy I got it from was ADAMANT it was spotted, not florida, but I figure you guys can help me out. I know he's still tiny but I'm hoping someone will know. Lots of pictures too.

Also, someone said I could tell by the "plates" near their lower jaw - does anyone have a picture of this as I wasn't exactly sure where I was looking. Sorry for some of the "upside down" pictures, it's just how I was holding my phone since my tank is in an awkward place.

most likely to be Florida unless that guy have DNA proof that it is a spotted. And the plate on the lateral of isthmus isn't what you can tell by looking, I think you have to pick the gill out to be able to see that but that will hurt the fish.

Ordered a 3inch spotted gar(I asked if it was a true spotted, owner promised it was and that he could send me a 4-5 inch) When trying to confirm shipping times over the phone the owner or employee seemed to be annoyed that I called, acted very unprofessional, I almost broke off transaction then, wish i did. Fish arrived on time, packaging was poor at best(almost like they wanted the fish to die)fish measured in at 1.75 inches(less than half the size he told me)not a spotted but a florida gar(which he said it was a true spotted gar) and the icing on the cake the fish was injured pretty badly in shipping, so even with my best efforts, he died 2 days later. Do Not Buy Gars from RFITROPICAL. They will tell u what ever to sell u a dead fish!

The guy I got it from has a few more of these - he's selling them as Spotted. He just got another shipment of gar in today which are labeled Florida.

Made me feel a bit safer that he was spotted since he's now selling Florida as well and hasn't changed the name on these guys, but yeah. How can you tell whether they're Florida or Spotted? The patterns look the same to me, and I apologize in advance but I'm not going through 91 pages to try and find out.

there is pretty much no different if you try to look with your eyes. I would say all spotted that you buy from lfs and online are 99% Florida. No matter how much you try to look, you will not find anything reliable in telling the different between the two species, a DNA test is the best and easiest way to do it.
