So sickly in regards to needs to be fattened up or stunted and I should worry about other issues?

okay hoping the picture was attached however its 9 inch's long now at night its whole body turn silver or when adjusting to comfort. but when its relaxed it has a huge stripe on the side and spots on the back. I know its a gar! but cofused as to what family it belongs to. for the longest time I thought it was a Florida but after visiting this site im confused if it is a shortnose. help!
