I agree that it is indeed so much easier to keep a tank without substrate clean. :) I used to have my tank like that...then added a thin layer of gravel recently for my cats to dig and play...

Well, yeah, I've sold them...and I wish i didn't. Anyway, it's too late now...though I'm looking for another one...not an albino though...

Does anybody know how many types of GG there are? A guy in an LFS mentioned Chocolate, Golden, Albino and Rainbow...

Currently I have 2 walking catfish and a clown knifefish in a 5 feet tank (approx. 140 gal). And a small Channa Maculata Snakehead in a 50 gal. :)
Your tanks sound overstocked as it is without adding a GG that channa that you have can get 3ft+! and very nasty.

My RTGG:

Gussy's tank measures 48x15x24 inches, and except for the gravel, heater, filter tubes, and water, he's the only thing in there. I had 3 goldfish and a crayfish in there for a week, and a couple 2" long chinese alge eaters for several months, but that's it.

Couple questions-
What's "substrate"?
What type of GG is Mr. Gussy?
Any idea why his fins aren't full and beautiful like the other ones I've seen pictured here?

Thanks,
-Matt

Substrate is the various types of aquarium gravel at the bottom of the tank. Some people use it some don't. I have both another tank for discus and had so many problems trying to keep the ph stable when using substrate, so we took it all out and everything was fine. The lesson learned was it make life so much easier when doing water changes etc without it and went the same way on the other tank. Some people find a bare bottom tank quite bland and hence the norm is to use substrate.

I guess Mr. Gussy is a Osphronemus goramy, common giant gourami - Golden or Albino.

Yep, they are somewhat overstocked according to European and American norms...but so very understocked according to Asian (and Mauritian) ones. :) We normally rely on heavy filtration and very frequent and massive water changes to maintain our tanks.

The Channa should be sold as soon as he grows a bit bigger... should get a good price with it...

Sorry for going a bit latin here, as far as I know there are 4 types:

Osphronemus goramy, common
Osphronemus exodon, elephant ear
Osphronemus laticlavius, red tail
Osphronemus septemfasciatus, can hardly find any info on this, but it is recorded as a sub species of giant
I prefer the Red Tail one... :) can't seem to find any here currently...
